Car got stolen

Last Saturday I was out in the afternoon. I got home, opened the garage, parked the M3 inside, turned it off, placed the key in the center console, and went inside; leaving the garage door open. This is an attached garage in a townhouse.
Not even a minute later, I hear the car start up, I run to the garage and see it backing out and speeding away. I called the police and the insurance company right away. Now I know it was careless of me, however, I live in a pretty good neighborhood and didn't expect this to happen. It took me a look time to find that car and I loved it like it was my child. Now I'm dealing through the nightmare insurance process. Not sure if it's gonna turn up or if it's in a container headed to the Middle East. In the event it doesn't turn up, I'm obviously going to have to purchase something else. I had the M3 as a weekend car and I have a daily driver. I was thinking of maybe something a less flashy and something awd and there would be no need for two cars. What would you guys do? I'm in jersey and winters are rough here Awd is a must.

That's terrible... I'd never want the car back. At least car shopping is fun to do. How about an Audi S6?

Yea, I'm sure the car is getting the hell beat out of it. I haven't really looked into the s6, but I will. Thank you.

Wow... What is your insurance company saying..? Do they know that you left the key in it? We had that happen with my husbands truck (key too, lol) and after two weeks we decided to go car shopping. The day we went to go the police called and truck was recovered. They went joy riding and it needed an alignment, but was otherwise fine... So annoying... We didn't want it back

Yea, even though I'm pretty sure they were from Irvington. It was like the scene from gone in 60 seconds, where they steal the escalade.

Yes the insurance company knows I left the key. I haven't heard from them yet, I just sent them the "packet" of records back. I loved the damn thing. Ughhhhh.

Key shouldnt be a problem because it was on your property, in NC that is only a big deal if it is in public.
That sucks though, a girl at work had her civic stolen and they found it a few days later. Beat to hell, the insurance company went ahead and got here another one instead of trying to fix it.

I don't think so either, in the 14 years I've owned cars this has never happened so I'm a little clueless on how this works.

Don’t mean to kick you while you’re down, but why the hell would you leave the key in the car AND the garage door open? How hard would have it been to stick the key in your pocket or close the door?? Not sure if this will impact your insurance settlement, technically it was your negligence that caused this.

Has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with poor choices.

You live in the stolen car capital of the country.
It's my home, I live in a good neighborhood, there's a Ferrari 4 units down from me. I didn't leave the car and went inside to take a nap, it was literally a minute.

You're right, I did was a bit careless that day. We will see what happens.

Yeah a minute is all it takes and good neighborhoods are usually where car theives lurk.

Good luck with everything

Man that sucks! I know the feeling you have. I had a Cobra Mustang stolen a few years ago from the "secured" parking lot at work. I have a couple snap shots from the security camera showing it being driven off. That was the strangest feeling to walk out to my parking space and the car was missing. It quickly turned to be pissed off about all the years I babied that car and it was the first time I had driven it to the office.

The insurance side went pretty smoothly for me so I hope you have a similar experience.
