Longevity Expectations. 2008 M3 E90
Today My 2008 M3 E90 turned 80K miles. Still running and looking great. I never have loved a car this much. I know I have to replace rotors and pads soon, and my front struts are showing signs of wear, one has a very small leak, so those need to be replaced within a couple of weeks. I am looking at possible $4,500 in repairs.
I have also budgtered for the next 2 years additional $5,000 for O2 sensors, battery, water pump, thermostat, hoses, engine mounts and AC pulleys. What else do you guys think I will need to replace? What about Engine rebuild? Cost? and When? My apologies if this was already discussed. Thanks. CM. |

OP, don't just replace things to replace them. There's nothing wrong with having some money reserved for repairs, but modern cars can pretty easily hit 100-200k without major issues. It's hard to estimate if/when the items you listed will need replacement. If they break, they break. Deal with it then.
As far as engine rebuild? It may never need one. The motor is one of the most reliable things in a car these days, and the M engines are generally overbuilt. Just keep on enjoying the drive and worry less about what *might* happen.

$5000 for those parts? OP, your numbers are so insanely far off. Either that, or you need to find a new shop if you don't DIY.
Good news for you is that you can use that money to mod the car haha

So I am interested in getting an M3, probably within a year or two, it will have to be used, so what are some of the things that would cost a lot to fix (how can I save the most on repairs)? And how much would it cost to do my own work on brakes and things like that? Also, how much of my own work can I do to the car with just a few jacks and no lift? I am not great mechanically, but I am willing to learn and fortunately my best bud used to be a BMW mechanic . Thanks for the help.

Especially since you have a friend that can help, they are pretty easy cars to learn things on. I do most of my own work (with the help of my friends sometime) and do all of it on jackstands
