Brake pad pictures...what do you think?

So how do these look. The BMW dealer said my brakes were fine but an independent dealer a couple months ago said I only had 20% left on the rears.

First picture is front and the second is the rear. I have a month of maintenance and I'd like to get the rears done under it unless they have many more miles left on them.

Rears wear very slow compared to front. Are both inside and outside pads equally worn and same in both sides with no taper? You clearly have more than 1000 miles left, so I doubt dealer will do anything.

Well that sucks I was hoping to be enthusiastic and wear them out. Getting an oil change on Friday I'll ask for a measurement.

My dealership advises that the pads be replaced at 5mm, but I'm not sure if that applies to the maintenance program. Will they only replace when the wear indicator is lit?

I have 63,500 on the car and it is still on the original brakes... according to the service info in the car's computer. Needless to say, I checked them this weekend and the front piston boot was torn. I think the interval is really lame.

Change em if you're going to drive the car hard. Thin stock pads fade even faster than new stock stock pads

why is the interval lame? I have 60k on original brakes as well and they still have lots of life as I drive all highway. Your boot being torn has nothing to do with the brake service intervals, as they get changed when the pad sensor kicks on (or a little earlier for those of us who don't want to change the sensor).

Of course, why would they do maintenance before it's required especially at their cost?

Find someone with worn OEM pads, slap them on and go back to a different dealer.

Maintenance Program is 3mm. If you have a good relationship with the dealer they can do a "Courtesy" service at their discretion.
