Question for those who have HUD
So last week I did the "Ultimate Driving Experience" here in Houston. It was a fabulous event, writeup in this thread: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1054898
I got to drive an M6 droptop after dark. It had the HUD, which I adjusted a bit for my tastes....but I still found it pretty bright. Does the HUD dim automatically when you turn the headlights on (or they go on by themselves)? I used the HUD in M mode most of the time, but found that it was kind of difficult to see the rev counter unless I was approaching redline. So I didn't see it as a true "rev counter" rather that more of a shift light type setup. How do you find the radio and nav info displays? Too much info? Not enough? I'm not so sold on this option having driven it again, especially as I wear polarized glasses and that washes it out. Thanks. Last edited by Needsdecaf; 11-17-2014 at 09:26 AM.. |

With polarized glasses, there is a complete washout. It is very difficult to see, so bad in fact, I am planning on buying a new pair of non-polarized sunglases solely for driving duties. To answer your question about dimming it, yes, there is a setting to turn down the brightness. I dont remember if there is an auto dimming feature. I only had my vehicle for a few days during ed.

I think I've adjusted my HUD once in 1500mi. I do not think it auto dims. Mine is set to the highest brightness. No issues with polarized sunglasses.

There are definitely issues with polarized sunglasses. I took the car on a test drive and didn't even know the car had the exec pack until after the drive and I took my glasses off. You can't see the HUD at all with polarized sunglasses.

I have polarized Serengetis and have no issue seeing the HUD when driving. IMHO it is a great driving aide. When you start to adjust the right thumb wheel to change channel on the radio, etc, the info is displayed on the HUD.

HUD is an option I plan on having on all my future cars. I love it.
You can not only change the size of the HUD display, you can also adjust it to be lowered/raise and even tilted to the angle you want. The rev display is not great, as it fills in segments rather than a smooth line from 0 to redline. I mainly used it for speed limit info, nav instructions, and song selection. I forget if you have ordered yours or not, but if not, HUD is worth the Exec package IMO.

If you're in M mode you won't get the extra info displayed in the HUD. I have to be in non M mode to see radio/media functions. I assume that's the same for NAV info. I haven' tried that yet.

That must be dependent on the type of glasses you have. That's weird, I could not see anything.

I have an F30 w/the HUD, I assume it's the exact same (except for M mode, obviously) It doesn't auto-dim, but it does switch colors when the headlights come on. That is, during the day, when your lights are off, it displays white. During night, when your headlights are on, it displays orange. I always leave my headlights on Auto ON/OFF but I assume it would work the same if you manually switch them. There is also a way you can adjust the brightness in the setting, but it stays constant day or night. The only thing that changes is the text color. Hope that helps.

My pair of Maui Jim does make HUD harder to see, but I can still read the speed and gear indicator in M-Mode. Tach in the HUD is very difficult to read though with my sunglasses.

Fwiw, Persols work well too but my Italian loafers not so much with auto trunk release. Neighbor suggested Adidas.

The HUD does dim slightly at night and like others, I set mine at almost full bright for best visibility. Once you go HUD you don't go back. Its one of those really nice features that you don't realize you really want/need until you use it.

HUD is a must for me. During normal driving i have it in regular mode so i get my Nav/Radio information on the windshield as well. I rarely look at the control display anymore since its all in the HUD. The Speed Limit info and speed is probably the best feature because i drive quite fast and i need to be able to quickly adjust my speed to the posted limit if i happen to see a nicely hidden police car waiting to ruin my day with a lame ass speeding ticket. Also for those that already have their F8x they can agree that the car creeps up in speed very easily and before you know it you are moving faster than intended so the HUD helps "put it in your face" a little more.

i think as far as it washing out with polarized sunglasses, it must depend on the type of sunglasses you have. the ones i have definitely make it harder to see the HUD, but by no means do they completely wash it out and make it impossible to see

Ray Ban polarised sunglasses here- Can view the HUD no problem. The HUD is my favourite option on the car , don't think I'll ever spec another car without it if it's an option.

Love HUD, it does auto dim for night and day, your eyes will eventually get used to looking for the grey bar in M mode, took me a little time but I can find it easily now

HUD Polarized Sun Glasses Fix
When I was recently checking out the M4 at a local dealer, I was told that the HUD can angle and shift to adapt to your polarized sunglasses. I would look into how to angle the display and try different variances of angle to see if you can tune your HUD in with your polarized glasses.

Personally I always thought they were a stupid idea... until I got my M3. Now I don't know why I didn't get it years ago. I love the different displays. Yes you can have times when it is difficult to see everything but all in all I find it very useful.
