Impressive how a big car like the M5 can be almost as fast as a much more track focus and smaller car like the M4, I would have not thought that!

The M5 has almost 170hp more than the M4 (600ps vs 431ps). That explains a lot. Keep in mind that this is a special edition M5 (30 Jahre edition), sort of Competition Pack Plus.

What I find impressive is how the M4 is able to overcome the power deficit through lighter weight and nimbleness.

The M5 has almost 160hp more than the M4 (600ps vs 431ps). That explains a lot.

Just wait until a comp pack comes... this is an M5 of which only 30 exist.

Question of perception I guess, to me the M5 is the better highway performer and the M4 is the track toy of BMW!

the M4 does what ever other car that weighs a lot less than a heavier car. it uses less power to make the same lap time. Nothing really new here.

we all know the M4 makes more than 430HP, is the 600 clam power underrated as well ? or is that a true number.

The M5 30 Jahre make 40% more power than the M4, yet it does not weigh 40% more (probably ~25% more).

So Alex - what did you find that was positive about the M4 in the article? Are you surprised that the M4 is faster around most tracks than a Jaguar F-type R which is a 2 seater, costs way more and has 125 more horsepower - pretty impressive for an M4 isn't it??

Both great cars and just shows you what the BMW M division can do, defy physics. This is common sense and I would sure hope that the M4 is faster. Us M5 owners wonder if the whole 30 Jahre edition power boost is a gimmick and is the true rating of the engine. C&D had the M5 CP on a dyno, when it compared it agains the E63 AMG-S, and it was pumping around 600hp.

For those of you who bench race and say that the gap should be greater between the two, get a life. 90% of M4/M5 owners will never see the track, even if they do, it's an organized non competitive event. I've only been to two, and love how my luxo barge can keep up with a variety of smaller and lighter sports cars. Whether it's 2/10 or a full second difference, either of these cars are impressive pieces of engineering.

Not you again!! lol

I have no problem giving credit where credit is due, and the M4 is a fast car(no one ever denied that), but in this case, the credit goes to the M5 IMO, 900lbs heavier, not as track focused as the F8x, and just as fast on this track, that day, pretty damn impressive for a car in this class!!

I agree here and not biased at all because I own an M5. Yes it is heavy and I wouldn't consider it a sports / track car. It's capable if you want to take it for the weekend, but it is an impressive feat of engineering nonetheless. I don't understand why people get so competitive / defensive on the forums. We don't make a living from racing our cars, so why do comparison videos get some of you so riled up?

Anyone know the layout of this track? That would give a better understanding about the outcome of the race.

Agreed, both the M4 and M5 are fantastic machines that serve different purposes and markets segments .

I actually thought that the M5 30 Jahre would trounce the M4 due to its huge power advantage. A 10mph advantage at the end of a straight is huge. I was surprised that the M4 was able to edge it out, hence my comment. On a faster track, the M5 30 Jahre may likely end up in front.

BTW, according to Auto Motor & Sport, the M5 30 Jahre beats the regular M5 by 0.6 seconds to 200km/h. That is quite significant. As a comparison, that is about the same difference between an M4 and a regular M5. This tends to indicates that the 30 Jahre does put down quite a bit more power . I also saw that video from MT, the way they estimated crank power with a drivetrain loss number pulled out of the a$$ was pretty laughable .

The s63tu is ridiculous.

I've been in a comp pack m5, and driven an m6. Both cars feel notably faster than my m3, which is damn fast in its own right

That engine is incredibly powerful, sounds good, and is very smooth. Beast of an engine, and the best motor Bmw makes right now for my money.

That said, I like the m3 a lot more than the m5, but it is a cool ride for those who want that type of car

What he found amazing is that the second gear traction in the F-Type R was astonishing. Way more important than the HP differential.

M5 - 560hp
M5 w/CP - 575hp
M5 30 Jahre - 600hp

M5 vs 30 Jahre - 40hp, that's a significant difference to 200km/h.

You thought the M5 would trounce the M4? I guess you don't understand physics. If the track had more straight sections, then maybe, but you can't fight weight around turns despite what M has done to the M5.

I'd take an F-TYPE R coupe any day over an M4. The exhaust sound and design alone is enough to convince me.
