BMW X5M or Porsche Cayenne GTS??
Don't Peak, get in here =)
Hi Guys, I need your help to decide which car should I buy . I just sold my BMW X6 50i (2012), now I'm in the market looking for a new car. After testing many cars (RRS, ML AMG, BMW X5M, Cayenne GTS) I ended up focusing on 2 cars that I really enjoyed driving. Most of the people around me saying, "Go with the Porsche!" and when I asked why? they simply said "it's more reliable, cooler brand (which I don't care about), cheaper to buy and better resale value." BMW X5M loaded, will cost me around 130k USD Porsche Cayenne GTS kind of loaded, will cost me around 120k USD I don't live in U.S so the prices might be different. The lucky car will be my daily driving car (20k miles per year) for the next 5 to 6 years. Last edited by icmp; 05-02-2015 at 04:36 PM.. |

all I can say, is my Porsche diesel is the best car I have ever owned, hands down. I have no experience with the X though. BMW has maintenance included, which can be pretty expensive on the Porsche.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is more comparable to the X5M than the GTS. The Turbo S will cost you about $50,000 more than the X5M.
Having driven my X5M for 600 miles, I say go for the X5M.

Thank you guys for your comments. I know X5M is more comparable to Turbo S performance but when we talk about prices X5M is more comparable to Cayenne GTS (at that's the case in my country).
Turbo S in my country costs around 220k USD, so it's about 90k USD difference. The offer that I got for the bimmer is without the maintenance package, just standard 2 years warranty like the Porsche Does BMW still use hard plastic in the interior of the new X5 especially in the trunk area? like E70/E71? |

Both are different cars, one is a NA V8 and the other is a twin turbo V8. If I were going to keep the car for a long time (6-8 years) I would go for the GTS, but if you're going to keep it for 4-6 I would do that X5M.
The current body style for the Cayanne is going to be updated, and the X5M won't be changing for a while, so for looks that all depends on you. IMO, I would get the X5M. |

Not even close. GTS will feel anemic after driving the X5M. I test drove one (with the V8) before getting my 2014 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. GTS needs another 100 hp to compete.
Also - smaller rear seat and smaller hatch. |

You drove the V8 which IMO lacks torque. The new turbo v6 engine is vastly superior in torque and performance.
The X5 M will no doubt be faster than the Cayenne GTS in the straight, but the GTS will have better road feel with hydraulic steering vs the electric found in the X5. The X5's steering is really numb. I just test drove the new X5 M and I can say the steering is okay and not as good as the GTS. Sport and sport plus is too heavy and overly numb. Comfort is the only setting I would leave it in, but it's not 100% perfect as there's too much tendency for the steering to return to center. Not a natural feeling. GTS although not as fast, it looks way better IMO and feels better on the road than the X5 M. The Cayenne GTS will also hold its value better than the X5. |

Visually, both cars are absolutely stunning.
On practicality, technicality and the future, the X5M is definitely the way to go. Even though I personally love the interior and the exterior of the new GTS, it is bound to completely change in the next two years. Plus, since the downgrade of the engine to a V6 I really don't see the GTS as powerful enough (even though the numbers suggest otherwise). The X5M is just revealed so you have a good 3 years before the minimal facelift and another 3 years before it gets completely redesigned so you've got a good 6 years of full use. Biggest plus to the M is that is it an absolute beast and the GTS is no competitor to it. I'd go for the X5M for sure. |

GTS is not a fair comparison to X5M. Apple to Apple comparison would be Turbo S.
The GTS is pretty heavy and does not move very well, I do like the interior finishes but everything from Porsche is optional, therefore, by the time you add up the nicer options into the build, you can easily look at $15K+ to add to your base. |

My wife just switched from the Porsche to the X5M. Way more fun to drive, and the electronics are lightyears beyond anything porsche puts in their cars. If you are going to be spending that much time in the car, trust me, the car infotainment/cellphone/nav/etc is just so much better in the X5M that you will wonder how you ever lived in the porsche.

Right. Only supercharged V6 is in the e-hybrid (same as Audi S4, A6, etc.) |

i moved from an X5M to a GTS. Didn't want to drop almost 200K on an SUV...that's best spend on a nice 911 in my book.
And I love BMW (though increasingly disappointed) - the best SUV out there is the Porsche CTTS. Porsche is a premium brand over BMW. Better quality parts, engineering, brand, etc. but its expensive as F. 170K! X5M def. has more torque tan GTS and you will notice - but lumbers around still with a truck feel. I do give the M better marks on brake feel and acceleration but that's about it. It's the "beast" and that is the feel you get. Sorta like comparing a tankbuster vs a jet fighter. Both fun and kick ass but one is just more refined and has the price tag to prove it. GTS is like driving a sports car handling wise and IMHO looks better, sounds better, handles better, better gas mileage, better brand, better interior, lower depreciation, adj air suspension, better steering, better off road, etc. Test drive one - you will be utterly confused as to how you are in an SUV but swear you are in a sports saloon. I think save for the torque its even better than the CTT handling-wise. If you just need to go fastest in a straight line and cant afford the Cayenne Turbo get the //M. If you want best all around performance SUV in low 100s get GTS. (note this is based off of last V8 GTS '14...haven't driven '15/16 with turbo V6) Last edited by MonacoJoe; 05-05-2015 at 11:06 AM.. |
