How do you put the transmission in park?
Test drove the X5M and after, I was left with the complicated task of trying to figure out how to put the car in park. Couldn't figure it out - other than turning the car off an on again. Which is what you would have to do with a DCT, but this is not a DCT. Seems like the gear knob needs a P setting. Am I missing something?
And just to be clear, I am not talking about setting the parking break. |

If it looks like this, it's not a DCT, but acts like one. Just set the brake and turn it off.

THis.
There is no park other than shutting motor off. While its not a DCT, its programmed to act exactly like a DCT. I shut car off in gear when Ive come to a stop. This puts car in park automatically. Car wont roll. The only other option is to put car in neutral and set brake. Unnecessary if you just shut car in gear. If you want to sit in car with car still running, neutral and set brake is way to do it.

Correct. I haven't quite worked out the pattern. Sometimes an engine shutoff goes to "P", sometimes it goes to "N" with a warning "Car will not lock from the outside! Secure vehicle from rolling!" and it takes a second press.
They've done an "interesting" job of the DCT copy, and I'm not sure I'm a fan. For example, after coming to a full stop there is no "automatic creep". On a slight hill, the car will roll. Tapping the gas pedal and letting go turns on "automatic creep" however.... but backing up a steep hill can prove interesting! |

Shut the car off in drive or reverse and it will shift into park.
Shut the car off in neutral with the parking break engaged and foot removed from Brake, push the start button which will shut down the power and shift it into park. |

It's interesting how different people react to different items. I, actually, very much like how BMW did the transmission and shifter control in the X5 M. It's quirky, and different, and fun. In one week, I've grown so accustomed to it, when I drove our other BMW yesterday, one with a "Regular" shifter, it seemed less intuitive. Perhaps, BMW should have made an option available for those who wanted the regular style shifter.

I do agree it's counter intuitive to just turn the car off in gear but that's how it works. A manual car required for you to come to a stop with your foot on the clutch or car in neutral then turn it off. |

The DCT shifter will stay where it was (no big deal, unless it was in reverse). |

Exactly what everyone said, on my e46 m3 SMG, I would just throw it into neutral and throw the e-brake on. I felt like leaving the car in gear would harm it and I had to put it into neutral when starting it anyways.

Just to clarify - does this mean there is basically no way for the car to be on and in park at the same time? I miss the park button tbh. |

yes..as previous posts says... 1. lift brake
2. DON't do anything else. car will run but stationary. If want to turn off car then press START button. If you want to turn off car quick way, just press start->brake auto engages. |

I get what you are saying, but in everyday life, it sort of comes into play more than you would realize.
On my test drive, I had to check something in the back of the car, because I heard something flapping there. So I pulled over and was sort of dumbfounded how to leave the car safely. I ended up just turning the car off. Same thing when I returned the car to the dealer. I wanted to get out with the engine running to check the lights. Again, it was a pain and seemed so unnecessarily complex. Why not give the car the best of both worlds if you can? The shifting competency of a DCT and the convenience of a parking setting of an auto? Leave the shiftier, just add a parking button. |

If you are driving with Auto Hold on, wouldn't it always set the parking break with hot rotors at a stop? I might be confused, but I thought auto hold just engages parking break.
