My oil level is at the bottom tic for loyal and I went to the local BMW dealership and they recommended I add two quarts.
I added the oil and now the max level is at the bottom tick is this an overfill? nothing is leaking out of the oil cap so is it harmful? |

Stop driving....yeah never add 2 quarts all at once! I know somebody is going to chime in here and scold you, but for future reference only add in 1/2 quart and drive for a bit and let the sensor re-calibrate, then add another 1/2 if low.

Either drain the front as leonardo suggested, or you can turkey baster some out of the oil filter housing a couple of times and see if that helps.

From everything I've read, you should only add oil when the car says so... And it should say so at the bottom tick.
And from what I've seen, the difference between the top tick and the bottom tick on the oil level in the dash is one litre. So adding 2 quarts when the oil is at the bottom tick would be too much... You will get oil frothing in the pan which may cause oil starvation in the engine and that would be bad...

Close, the min-to-max scale is a one liter difference (1.06 quarts). Since the e-meter can only show one-quarter liter increments, there will be some rounding errors to the nearest quarter-liter, and other factors (like how close to level the car is) that affect accuracy on this thing. See other threads on this...

This is exactly what we do in the shop just make sure you start and run it for a couple seconds in between and don't split the seal. also the faster you can get to the housing the more you can get out each clip.

My local shop in Poway just put it up on a lift and drained 2 quarts out of the plug. Now the lvl sits right between ok and max.
