Lowering spring comparison from IND.

The F8x M’s in-cabin adjustable dampers provide a tremendous range of driving experiences, and can transform the car from comfortable to sporty at the push of a button. Although most springs are a lateral move at best from a performance standpoint, many M owners choose to add lowering springs for a simple, low cost solution of lowering their car and simultaneously retaining the original BMW damping adjustment.

In order to shed some more light on the myriad of available spring options, we’ve created a simple comparison of each. IND has each type of spring in stock and measured the overall length, coil count, and coil diameter of each spring. We also tested the spring rate of each on Fall Line’s spring rate tester, to see what the actual measured rate is.

A few notes:
  • The springs shown here may have a variance in material. It is not possible for us to know the metallurgical makeup of the springs, and this will obviously have an impact on spring rate, ride quality, and other factors.
  • It is my hope that this thread will improve in depth and scope in the future, as IND gathers more information and data.
  • In the near future I will also measure compressed length of all of the springs, to give a clearer picture of how each spring functions.
  • Calculating spring rate based on OD/ID of the springs is not necessarily possible, because nearly every spring set has a complex shape, with the exception of the KW rear springs.

are eibach's numbers reversed for F and R..wouldnt R be super low then given that it is already lower than the front?

but this is very helpful..too bad we cant see actual compression/spring rates stats

Awesome post. So how did the tested spring rates compare with the stated specs for each?

I imagine most of these springs won't have a singular spring rate due to their progressive nature.

What is the diameter of the KW HAS front springs? Trying to figure out for the right GC camber plates.

Thanks,
