F15 Rotor and Brake pads

Curious to know...

For some reason our F15 X5 has little to no brake dust, actually I haven't seen any! The vehicle only has about 2,400 KM on it. I couldn't go a day in our E70 X5 without noticing the brake dust and in a week I'd be washing the car if it needed it or not because the wheels were so bad.

So I'm trying to figure out if BMW changed the material of the rotors and pads or will I start seeing brake dust as I get a few more KM's on the car?

All recent BMW's have newer pad compounds that barely dust and even when they do the color is more golden brown than dark grey like in the past.

Both of my F10's were this way and so is my X5. Now that I upgraded to the MPBK which is basically the old X5M brakes my pads dust like HELL! Wheels turn black after driving for half a day but its a price i'm willing to pay for that awesome brake feel with instant bite.

Oh man, I've done enough cleaning of the wheels through out the years. That's good news for me! I won't miss that at all and especially after getting these black rims recently. They are still clean after 4 days.

Do you know if all their brake pads got changed to the new material other than the MPBK. The reason I ask is I'm wondering if I can get these new pads for the E46s we have for the kids or even the E70. The person who bought my car is ready to pull their hair out...it's their first BMW...I told them it's the sign of a good quality German braking system.

That i'm not sure. You can always look into Hawk brake pads which dust a lot less than the old bmw stuff. Another member said they like pads from Carbotech but I don't have any experiences with them.

Hey thanks Alan. I looked at the Hawks and settled for Akebono with BMW Rotors on my Son's E46. They're ok dust wise but they need time to heat up. It's not a bad setup but it's not the same as OEM. My son's car is going in for a recall. I'll ask them if the new material is available for his car. Appreciate your help.

I also noticed how much less dust there is. Why I often choose rims with simpler designs. This car I have came with rather complex rims (for cleaning anyways) and I was kind of worried of all the extra scrubbing I needed to do, but looks like that to be not the case.

Yup! My E70 and E60's had so much brake dust built up on my front rims that some people thought I powder coated them

This was the best improvement BMW could have made. I'm 5 days with these new black rims and they still look as good as when we put them on. I wonder if they'll last longer then the old material. I would assume they would.
