E92 M3 OR 16 M4? (Need Help)
Hello everybody I recently got a call from BMW and they offered me a deal where I get a free M4 lease; meaning zero down with a payment of $750-800 a month on a 82k car. Currently my Lime Rock Edition I pay $830.00 a month as the MSRP of that car is 82K.
My situation is that my E92 is a 6 speed in which I enjoy and love. But businesses are on the way and I'm locating in Brooklyn and traffic on the belt park way is terrible and I'm not a huge fan of public transportation. I wanted the M4 mainly because of comfort (DCT and the Turbo will be better on Gas; plus a 4 year warranty) But the S65 in my E92 is honestly intoxicating and one of the best engines i've ever experienced I'm my life. (I've driven many sport/supercars too) My fear is that the M4's engine will not deliver the same pleasure as my S65 Looks on both cars are 10/10 interior too 10/10 But the fun factor is something i have to question. Also the exhaust note has to go to the E9X's hands down. Such a hard decision because i love my baby (E92) and it will gain more value over time. |

It was also a difficult decision for me but had to let go the E92. Yes the exhaust note is something I miss but the F80 is just a better package all together especially if you use it as your DD.
The stock exhaust note isn't bad at all but I recommend installing DPs for more punch Good luck with your decision |

Not exactly the same, but I loved my e60 M5. The V10 was awesome in performance and in sound. However, the car was designed in what, 2004/5? Nine or ten years ago! I wanted something newer and tighter. You'll have to drive it and decide based on your own standards of course. For me, having a new car with the latest technology and a warranty made it a no brainer. I have no regrets at all in moving to the M4.

With that, if you do get a M4, a modded exhaust is a must + CANFlap valve controller, etc. to get it to sound nearly as good as the V8. Truth is, it will never sound like the staccato V8 in the E92. As for the "fun factor", as other have said, the M8x platform has really moved the game forward on all fronts (sans exhaust note), that the "fun factor" has evolved. As for better MPG, meh, the way we drive these cars, I still get 17 - 18 MPG vs. the 14 MPG I used to have on the E92. Is it better? Sure, a lot better? Not really. If you drive on Efficient on the Highway on top gear, you can get 27ish MPG, whereas the E92 could do no better than 24 in my exp. Last edited by S65V8; 12-26-2015 at 04:20 AM.. |

I had the same problem after the e92 . But after 4 months of ownership the f80 definitely brings a huge smile everytime I drive it , but so did the e92.
The low down torque is definitely a big compensation for the lack of engine note but for me the exhaust note even on a factory exhaust is definitely addictive in sports + but mine is the lci version which by all accounts is better than the first f80 s . You won't be disappointed is all I can say. |

Get an MPE. It doesn't make the engine noise "the same" at all, but it does make it much much better and certainly fun to listen to. After that, it's no contest.

OP, the financial aspect does not seem to be a concern to you.
Although from your current car payment and assuming you have not refinanced, it would appear you put a lot down and you mostly paid off that car by now. I would pay it off, and then lease the M4, afterwards straight up. If you can live without the LimeRock then, the situation may support selling it. Performance wise, it seems you will be in traffic mostly. So e9X or M8X you will be doing the speed limit. I would keep the LimeRock for your current needs. |

I don't think you will find the right answer unless you jump in with both feet and experience the car for yourself. Of course on a m4 forum everyone will tell you it was the best decision they made, but if you ask on a e9x forum they will tell you you are crazy.
The m4 is a nice car no doubt, but i would not get rid of a special car like the lime rock for a normal m4. Just look at 08-09 m3's now, they are a dime a dozen which the m4 will be in 5 years. But lime rock will still be 1/200 and might even be sought after many years down the line. (especially since it's a 6 speed, all the ones I see for sale are dct) However, I understand that we get bored of the same car sometimes and I get that too. If you start to get an itch for a new car most times it won't just go away. Try to get as many test drives of the m4 as possible and see if it's something you can see replacing the e92. |

Sounds like you love the E92. Why not keep it and try it out for a while in your new location? If it starts getting inconvenient or you just decide it is time for a newer car, then swap it for an F80/F82. You can always find a car deal even if a dealer is trying to make it sound like they are offering a once in a lifetime deal. I find it is better to decide what you want to do and then work the deal rather than basing a decision on a deal you may have on the table.

No brainier bro lol... move UP to the E92's successor in every way... the S65's exhaust note (being an N/A) will naturally be better stock vs stock* But aside from that EVERYthing else about the newer platform is significantly better... you'll laugh at yourself for even the hesitation after making the move and settling into ur M4.
ps: That's a phenomenal deal they're giving you on that lease! |

The only thing I can suggest is doing multiple test drives of the cars back to back. Some prefer the f80 over the e90 while others prefer the opposite. You will only know once you test them out yourself. I personally have liked the f80 more and more every time I drove it, thats why I suggest multiple test drives.

if you are worried about engine noise, and characteristics of the engine. they dont get a M4.
if you are looking to get into a better performance car that will offer more modern tech get the M4. |

I thought I wanted an F82. I am still on the fence about it. Just waiting for that right deal to come along that I can't say no to. Until then, I'm keeping my '13 ZCP. It's winter time here anyways in NY. Car is in storage. I would hold off at least till spring if I were you since you are in NY also!

I love my F80 and on paper, the numbers surpass the E92, tech is also much better. However, depending on how you drive the car, the emotional aspects of the car are very different. With the power available down low, no need to really wind up the engine to high revs to get power, which is great for city driving but the feel is different.
I wish i could have both a lime rock edition and my F80. I would definitely try to get an extended test drive to see if the car is for you before you decide. |

Are you ever going to elaborate or just keep saying essentially the same line in multiple threads? Maybe you already did and I didn't see it. It may be helpful to the OP as to why you feel the way you do.

It's a difficult decision in my hands because i really love the M3 E92 6 Speed with it's amazing S65 Motor. It honestly reminds me of my neighbors CGT 05.
I actually had both cars idling next to each other and they have similar characteristic; when they start up and get going because the power is made up top in the rev band. (Both have a lot of character and soul) The M4 however with the MPE isn't that bad. Also with the zero down and full 4 year warranty this will allow me to save some cash; instead of dumping my money into a car that doesn't have warranty. The DCT is also promising because i drive to NYC everyday and the 6 speed is a pain in the A55 with bumper to bumper traffic. The E92 M3 is my only car and it's a 6 speed with warranty ending. What would you do? Keep or lease a new M4? Car will be used daily and the value in my eyes in 10 years with 80k miles or more; wouldn't be much for my E92 M3 Unless i do a block swap with Dinan for 25k (LOL). |

I went e92 m3 to f80 and back to e92 after 6 months. If you redline your e92 m3 a lot or live in the high revs -6k to 8500 then you'll very much miss,e92. If you rarely revved above 6k then you likely won't miss it.
I missed the throttle response, power deliver and sound of e92. My f80 with mpe just couldn't make up for it. |

I have no regrets going from E90 6sp to F80 6sp. But then I've lived with the E90 6 years which was enough time to get it out of my system.
The performance on the F80 is easier to exploit since you can get the car to move and experiment with little revs on the dial. With the E90, things tended to happen at a higher speed due to the need for revs, which made it more dangerous for me personally. Also on track, the new car is significanlty improved over the old one, in every possible way. On track at higher revs the throttle response and lag simply aren't an issue, and the chassis makes use of the newfound power very well. Is it a better daily driver? Yes from some respects, no from others. It is a more relaxed cruiser due to the torque, and that nets you better fuel economy - that means more miles between fill ups which could be quite annoying on the E90. But the E90 in comfort mode was softer, and the new car has the solidly mounted rear axle which you will definitely notice over potholes. Also if you drive in Efficient, be prepared for epic lag and throttle laziness. Like I said, the switch was a no brainer for me. But I can see how some might regret it.
