IIHS Tests BMW LED Headlights; Low Scores

"The Prius v's LED low beams should give a driver traveling straight at 70 mph enough time to identify an obstacle on the right side of the road, where the light is best, and brake to a stop," said IIHS senior research engineer Matthew Brumbelow. "In contrast, someone with the halogen lights would need to drive 20 mph slower in order to avoid a crash."

At the other end of the spectrum, the halogen lights on the BMW 3-Series were deemed the worst among 44 headlight systems to earn a 'poor' rating. A driver would have to be traveling no faster than 35 mph to stop for an obstacle in the travel lane. BMW's upgraded LED curve-adaptive lighting is better, but not good enough to earn above a 'marginal' score.

Was expecting better

Watched some videos. Probably why not seeing much improvement for me. The roads I drive a mainly are
heavily traveled. The sensors are trying to direct light away from other cars. so doubt getting anything close
to what the LED's designed for

perhaps they should focus on the antiquated dot laws that prohibit better lighting to be available in the US/NAR. I have always installed E-Code / Euro Spec headlights on nearly every vehicle I owned. The cut-off is sharper, the headlights vary between 20-25% more light than their US/NAR counterpart, they illuminate more of the shoulder and traffic signs and of course they are aesthetically pleasing since they do not have a large gross amber reflector. Below you can see some of the differences between the US/NAR Tri-Xenon AFS Adaptive Headlights found on the 2015 Q7 versus the European version for the same vehicle:

Agreeing, I drive a lot in Autobahns at night and my bi-xenons on my 2011 E70 X5 were really marginal, while the LEDs on my 2015 F85 are very good.
