I had a problem with my 335i until I found the right pace. A swift kick with no pause under the center of the bumper works best. Don't pause or dangle your foot underneath, slow deliberate movement doesn't work. Good Luck!

I seem to be getting better at it with time. I can now open it within one or two kicks.

Try waving your foot underneath and then taking a step back away from the bumper. That "method" works for me 100% of the time. I thought I remember reading somewhere that the sensor is making sure you're clear of the trunk before it opens. I know it sounds stupid, but seem to be true.

For those having intermittent success, try standing a foot away then swiping your foot below rear bumper. If you stand to close the trunk lid won't open as it senses you hovering overhead. Thus won't hit you upon release. Plus the tail lights flash beforehand, so look for that as well.

^^ exactly. It was explained to me at the Welt when I picked the car up. You need to follow this procedure in order for it to work perfectly. I never have an issue getting it to open.
1. Step up to the rear bumper about 2 feet away. 2. Kick under the bumper a good distance. Do this swiftly but you don't have to Bruce Lee it. 3. Then STEP BACK! The car is looking for you to stand clear of the trunk as it opens so it doesn't clock you as the lid comes up.
