Don't use tire shine anymore!
At least the petroleum oil based one because they damage paint, I noticed in my other car GTI, I noticed the bumper area behind the rear wheel well suffers burn-like effect, you know when you put some heat near a plastic object, it sort of becomes rough and burned. I will take some pictures later.
When you put on those oil shine and drive the car, the centrifugal force will cause the oil to come off and make it to the bumper area. I thought it was gasoline that might have dripped but it happens on both side. Then I started searching and found many discussions about how it does damage paint and saw a few pictures to confirm. I used it 2 times in my F15 luckily no damage was done and I stopped using them. |

I'm honestly really surprised people still don't buy better tire dressing than the slop you buy at Wal Mart that slings all over you car. I've used Showroom FX White Pearl for years and bought the last gallon available in 2013. Not sure what I'll use once I use that up. Stuff is the best...

There are plenty of tire shine products out there that isn't petroleum based.
I've been using this for years. Not only does it make the tires look great it is also protecting it.

I also hate the gunky, greasy cheap-o looking tire dressings. Aerospace 303 gives a nice warm "healthy" look to tires and other rubber pieces but I prefer it for interior panels. My go-to tire dressing is Zaino Z-16. It is also water based and gives just a bit more gloss without looking sloppy. A second coat will really brighten it up if you so desire.

agreed. also if you use a gel and do not apply more than necessary there is no reason it should be on your vehicle.

I don't like the gels much. Bit messy to apply. I want something that I can spray on a foam applicator, and then apply to the tires. The only gel I have in my arsenal that I like is the Optimum Opti-bond. For the rest, I only use Showroom FX White Pearl.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but thanks for the tips on which dressings to use. I was using the Black Magic Tire Wet, but haven't been able to find it here in the stores anymore. I'll check out Detailer's Domain.

Yes, throw that away and never use it again. Detailer's Domain has lots of good options. The Adam's VRT is nice, and so is the Opti-bond. I have the Sonax tire gel and it's garbage. Probably the worst I've ever used.

Here's a tip for you guys. I've been using this as my tire shine applicator for years and its great because I can leave it in the car and not make a mess out of my hands when applying tire gloss. You can even inject the gel type stuff into the applicator so you have some on the road.

With tire shine I either let it dry up or if I'm going with a shop I wipe the excess off.

We are simply using this as a applicator. What I do is spray the shoe shine sponge with tire gloss then wipe it on the tire. How it looks depends on the tire shine you are using. Using this just prevents your hands from getting filthy and at the same time be able to store it somewhere cleanly since there is a cap for it.
