18" more fuel efficient than 19" ?
I was reading a thread on mtorque about someone swapping from 19" to 18" wheels on a E46 M3, he claims he's getting 2mpg better efficiency after the swap?
Anyone ever heard of this? would be a good argument for the 18" wheels |

less rotational mass would make the car slightly more efficient, I have seen better fuel economy from switch from my 19's to the 17 inch wheels. For 2 MPG however I would not give up the look of the 19's

No. Any differences are negligible.

prob not - but if you mount 5 inch wheels with 185's on them you will.

If gas mileage means that much, you should not be buying an M3. I don't know what my mpg is on my RS4 and I won't be keeping track of it on my new M3. Face it if you drive an M3 agressivly your mpg will be like a big SUV no mater what size wheels you use.

Yes definitely matters. I switched from 18"s to 19"s and it dropped about 1-2mpg also. My car is definitely not as swift either.

I suspect simply bumping up your pressures on long highway trips will make a bigger difference than switching 18s and 19s.
+1 on why you would care in the M3 though.

It takes a lot more torque energy to initiate rotation with the 20/19's. Any acceleration, standing or rolling, is negatively affected by a larger circumference.
That being said, a car with 19's or 20's will coast further so any MPG loss is washed away by that gain. |

just something to think about, I heard that the 18" wheels were lighter than the 19's
but add the tires and the 19's were lighter... so with that fact, the 19's should get the better mileage.

I would be surprised to find much if any a difference in economy, both are the same width and both have roughly the same circumference. So personally I doubt it's true, maybe it's the unsprung weight coming into play.

I would imagine the only thing that could make a 2 mpg difference would be a different circumference. Any other variable would be such a small change I don't think you would even notice.

Wheels and mileage
Agree--any differences will be infinitessimal. The diameters are the same and weight is within a pound or so between OEM 18s and 19s. Now put on heavy cast 20s with 295mm rears and there might be a small measurable difference.
