How do you listen to your music collection?

Ok. All my stuff is on USB stick. Organized in folders by artist and albums. All tagged properly

In my previous car it would play in order. Let's say ArtistA AlbumA selected. When whole album finished it would play AlbumB of this artist.

In M3 it just goes to first song.

Is there any way to make it play in order? Artist/Album?

Anyone know what the NEW idrive's limitations are when it comes to music collection size? Anything published anywhere?

Some system have increased internal storage size, but the limitations are unchanged as far as I know.

I have not tested any external over 2TB, but have not had any playback trouble.

If any directory has more than 500 songs, I sometimes have to unplug and plug device back in to properly index.

That sucks if the limitations haven't changed when it comes to overall # of songs and # of songs in a playlist. Germans screwed up on that one...

For what are you looking? Do you really plan to scroll through thousands of songs to find a particular track?

I just turn on shuffle then use the previous / next button on the right hand of the center console, it plays the next random song

I pay 9.99 for google play music and just bluetooth stream that all the time. Quality is good and they have like 99% of all the music ever available immediately.

Its not that funny - I can stream to my phone anywhere in the world without filling up my measly 128gb internal storage, and I locally store a handful of albums prior to long flights. I spend about 1/3 of the time out of the US so having everything streamable on demand in high quality is totally worth it to me.

On the contrary, I used to pay for Sirius XM for $10 a month, and the quality was abysmal.

Search via touchpad works well; but, in my experience, although voice commands work great for standard menu items, I have not had the best results with either Contacts or Music.

I just let my satellite subscription expire a month ago and have not regretted it one bit.

I have an ipod classic plugged in with about 14,000 songs, or 100gb's. I can search through idrive by artist, album or playlist.

iPod classic here with 160GB. Whatever I could do on iPod directly I can do through iDrive including random play. I can skip songs/scroll in random play using iDrive wheel or steering wheel thumb wheel. Listen to radio occasionally to hear latest tunes and download the ones I like to my iPod.

I use a 128gb thumb drive in the center console. My entire music library is in a Music folder with folders by Artist. I have a separate folder for playlists, and movies. Music videos are mixed with the music since iDrive can let me filter anyway. Coded video playback while in motion. Works fairly well, I can search, play playlists etc. artwork shows up too.

I've never used the internal storage since I came from a F30 and the internal didn't store artwork. Are there any other features internal storage has that a thumb drive doesn't?

Since taking delivery of my M3 last week, I've had my 160GB iPod Classic plugged into the USB port in the armrest. However, I'm getting the same disconnection glitch that others have reported with the iPod Classic. Every once in a while the USB doesn't recognize the iPod and I have to unplug it from the USB port and plug it back in (and sometimes completely restart the iPod) to get it to load again. I hate it when this happens, it's distracting and difficult to do when you're driving, and it's happened close to 10 times to me in the past week.

Both of your iPod Classics work fine without disconnecting? (edit -->after more reading, it seems the most complaints about the iPod Classic seem to be from iDrive 5.0 users, so perhaps this is a newer problem with the older iPods...?)

I'm ready to walk down the street today to the Apple Store and buy a new iPod Touch. From other people complaining about this problem, it seems that the lightning connector is far more stable than the old Apple 8 pin connector? Do I have that right? Would an adapter from 8 pin to lightning solve the problem?

You can also just use an external drive (HDD or flash), unless you really want to buy another apple product.

I realize that's an option. I'm more comfortable using iTunes than dragging and dropping folders onto a flash drive.

To each their own. I have not used any apple products in 20 years, so I am not the best person to give non-biased advice on the subject.

I just know that regular hard drives are not going to be subject to supported OS compatibility issues.

I drag my entire itunes music and movie folder onto a 128gb USB thumb drive. You can export all your playlists to the thumb as well. Then all you have to do is find and replace the path in all the playlists. Doesn't take that long to do.

Using an ipod touch, however, I haven't tried yet. It's got to be so much easier to just sync it. Let me know how it turns out because I might want to switch if it's THAT much easier.

edit: One thing that I think won't work with the ipod touch is the video playback while in motion. I can play music videos and movies on the thumb drive while driving. I was told that this won't work for connected phones, and I'm guessing the same for the ipod.

I have the same iPod Classic and 5.0 issue. Someone else said they got an iPod Touch and it also did not work, but I've been using my music via USB on my iPhone with zero issue, so I'd be very surprised if there are problems.
