RAC Monolites RG4
Anybody with any info on RAC Monolite RG4 wheels in 19" for the e92 M3? Am still shopping and doing recon on my wheels for my car when it arrives and am finding not much info on this wheel. Any thoughts or dealer contacts out there?

I'm also not totally sure if the E46 CSL style is right for this new car. When the new CSL comes out, it will shape a whole lot of opinion on what is the next big thing, I would suspect.

That is what I am betting on as well. The E46 CSL design will be history the minute the E92 CSL is released, but we won't see quality replicas for some time from now.

Wow, these are nice. Greg, I didn't see a price listed at that thread you referenced. Did I miss it, or hasn't it not been announced yet?

RAC prices
Well, I believe $3,800/set was mentioned, though I wouldn't bet that is accurate. That's what I paid for these several years ago, and with metal, energy and transportation costs up I would expect them to be more. The quality is worth it, though. RAC production is very sporadic, but I'm in no hurry.

Greg, one more question. That color is that finish on the wheels in post #2?

I had them painted the stock Audi wheel color, that is a little brighter than the BMW one. That was taken in my garage under fluorescents. I'll get some better photos in sunlight.

E46 RAC RG4s on E92
I just sold my RG4s to a guy whose putting them on his E92 M3. I did comparative measurement and test fitting today, and found they are very close. With 5mm spacers on the front only the outer face of the wheel will be in ths same plane as the stock 19s, but the wheels are 1/2" wider.
By measuring the overall width (out-to-out) of the wheels, then subtracting the back space (distance from mounting hub face to rear of wheel), I calculated the amount the face of the rims protruded from the hub as follows: Stock F: 9 7/16 - 5 3/4 = 3 11/16 R: 10 7/16 - 6 1/16 = 4 3/8 RG4 F: 9 15/16 - 6 7/16 = 3 1/2 R: 10 7/8 - 6 1/2 = 4 3/8 I then fit the wheels on the car and measured clearance to the shocks/struts. It was 3/8" in front (5/8" with spacer) and 1 1/4"+ in the rear. Overall pic here looks a little wierd because of the very wide angle lens and the fact the suspension is drooping. Following photos are of rear, front, and front with 5mm spacer.

Message from Chuck at RAC
I had inquired about them building an E92 M3 wheel. This is the response I got from Chuck today.
"The easy thing to do would be to build an RG4 in dedicated widths and offsets for the e92. But my thought is that e92 owners would prefer a wheel that differenciates the car from the e46. We have options, one I am exploring is wheel not unlike the RG4 but with fewer spokes.. lighter and more aggressive. We can always also offer a RG41 for those that prefer a classic look." Post your thoughts here about what design(s) you'd like to see.

Could we get a drawing of what Chuck had in mind? I like the general idea. Last edited by haen; 06-10-2008 at 04:11 PM.. |

The Champion RS171 would be a candidate, the M3 looks good with straight spoke wheels, or subtle Y spokes. The RS171 may look better on our slightly chunkier cars with slightly thicker spokes. The rear wheel on the 997 looks beautiful, purposeful and spare. A satin gunmetal finish would be good on lighter cars, don't like this wheel as much in silver.
http://www.championmotorsport.com/997RS171.htm for inspiration, HRE P43, another great looking straight spoke wheel. I saw this in black on a 997, it was a very strong and elegant setup. The look is a distant cousin to the OEM 19". I bet RAC could design an even better looking version of this general design. http://www.hrewheels.com/monoblok/porsche/p43/ The RG4 still looks superb. I don't think this style of wheel is ever going to look completely out of date. |
