Another water pump failure
My water pump died on Tuesday. Ordered the kit off of oembimmerparts.com and replaced it and the thermostat on Wednesday. No issues the rest of the week til this morning. Went back to the shop and we found no leak (pressurized the system) and the pump is getting power but not turning on. Pump failed to self prime when I put it into the self priming mode this morning while testing everything else. Anyone ever get a defective electronic water pump in an N series engine? Car is a 2013 135is

Haven't heard of that being a problem, but you never know given that its electric. When your pump failed, did it fail completely or just start to run slow? There's a fuse (in the DME box) for the water pump, but if the pump is getting power, that's not your issue. Any codes? Have you tried the manual water pump test (same as bleeding process)?
1) key in dash 2) hold gas down 3) Press start (but do not start) 4) Set temp on climate control to max 5) hold gas for 10 seconds Are you seeing/hearing any movement of coolant at all? If not, I'd say you have a dead water pump.

Power but no pumping... sounds like a bad/defective pump to me.
I used to work with a tech who liked to say... "just bc it's a new part doesn't mean its a good part"!! Yes, new parts fail. More so in the OEM and OE vs dealer(in a BMW box, bought from a BMW dealer) bought parts. The parts suppliers make a batch of parts for say BMW... some of those parts do not meet BMW AG standards... so the parts builder sells the parts that did not meet BMW AG standards to the aftermarket world of parts sales. This is how the world works. Sorry that your water pump failed... but sometimes that happens. I hope the parts seller has some sort of "parts" warranty. Maybe they will pick up some of the labor involved to install pump number two. Dackel

Hey guys appreciate the responses. Pulled the pump and it appears that it was in fact a defective part. Tried bench testing it and it was grounded on itself. Not sure if the packing around the shaft of the pump was bad or what, but replaced it and had no issue since. On a positive note, it goes faster swapping them out the second time.
