Cracked windshield.
A rock hit my windshield today on the highway (sounded like a bullet) and cracked my windshield. I never had to deal with a broken windshield before. I believe I do have glass insurance. Should I take it to the dealer or an auto glass shop?

I think any decent insurance company lets you use the repair shop of your choice. You have HUD, auto wiper etc, wouldn't let anyone else touch it other than the dealership. Is it a large crack or a rock chip?

Anyone else think the windshield glass on the X5 is very weak? Like so weak that it is prone to chipping, staring, or cracking?
I also had a rock chip on the X5M, luckily mine could be filled with resin and is no longer noticeable. I had a chip that spread to a 12" crack on the 50i MSport (F), as well the previous X5 35i (E). My parents have also replaced their windshield on both the previous gen (E) and current (F) X5's they have owned. That's 5 X5's (E's and F's) that needed either full windshield replacements or for a star/crack to be repaired. Never had these issues with the 3 series or the X3, although it may just have been luck with those cars.

I would take it to dealer as much as I hate to, unless a reputable company can give you warranty and ensure OEM parts, the labor will be much better with these type of companies such as Safelight as long as they can ensure the product is OEM! Have it verified.

Take it to a dealer. I would recommend Paul Miller in NJ about 30 min away from the bridge. I've been going there for service since 2011 and think they are great. Check with your insurance and most likely it's covered without a deductible.
