Anyone switch oil to 10w-60?
Thinking of switching at next refill. Anyone do this and have issues?

Pulled through the dealer for a free top off on the oil last week (first one I've had)... that's the type of oil the tech used from a can to do my top off - when I questioned him he said they were using it to slowdown the consumption a little.

From Mike Miler: "If you are using something else, switch to Lubri-Moly or Red Line 10W-60 engine oil. This engine does not like low viscosity engine oil, and the BMW 10W-60 tends to test out "finished" upon oil analysis at 4,000-5,000 miles. Reduce oil and filter change intervals to every 5,000 miles using one of these two products, and have analysis performed: www.blackstone-labs.com.
That said, BMW considers one liter engine oil consumption every 500 miles to be normal in M cars. I disagree."

From Redline:
Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in your M6 switching to a higher viscosity oil could help reduce consumption as well as just the switch to our oil. The 10W60 would be a significant change, more than twice the viscosity at operating temperature compared to a 5W30, I might not start with that big a jump but would be interesting to see what difference it makes where excessive consumption is present. Regards, Dave Granquist

Actually I was told the opposite, that BMW switched to 10w-60 due to rod bearings failing with 30 weight oil.

I would also keep in mind initial start up on cold starts ,if the oil is too thick it won't get into tight clearance areas such as crank and rod bearings, especially in cold climates your looking for trouble,A thicker oil than recommended would probably be ok in very hot climate areas
