ACC stop & go in bumper-bumper traffic

X5 owner for 6 months now and I've only used ACC perhaps two or three times during a long road trip. I was having a discussion with a friend over the stop & go function and now am hoping you guys could help clarify a couple of questions I had.

I had used ACC once in bumper to bumper traffic, but as soon as the car ahead of me gave enough space based on the distance I had set, my X5 accelerated rather abruptly to get up to the designated ACC speed. I quickly turned it off since I was concerned I'd end up rear-ending someone ahead of me. Here are my questions:

1) ACC stop & go, does it work in bumper to bumper traffic? If not, why not? Is bumper-bumper traffic a scenario specifically for TJA? If so, how do you use it appropriately?

2) Is 20 mph (32 kmh) the minimal speed setting for ACC? If so, how can it work in bumper-bumper traffic? Wouldn't it accelerate immediately to reach that minimal threshold speed limit and halt itself as soon as the car ahead stops, in order to maintain distance?

Thanks in advance, guys!

From my experience:

1) Once you come to a stop for over like 2 seconds, ACC disengages. TJA is designed for bumer-bumper traffic, not just ACC stop & go itself.

2) Cannot set under 20 MPH but it will maintain less than 20 to match the car in front. I haven't had issues with it accelerating abruptly but it just leaves too much of a gap in traffic that I get cut off constantly - then ACC slams on the brakes to keep the programmed distance.

Poor execution overall in my opinion, I rarely use it unless there is almost no one else on the road.

You wont rear end anyone. The system is very reliable. The only thing to watch out for is to ensure the laser is locked on the car ahead of you and a visual confirmation of that is shown in your dash/HUD.

ACC works in stop and go traffic. If you come to a complete stop, simply press the RES button on your steering wheel and the car will continue on with ACC enabled.

Mine will do the abrupt accel and braking too. The system sucks. I don't use it unless I'm going slow. On the hwy I just use regular cruise control. Or I use ACC and just use the gas pedal to maintain the distance I want to be behind the car until they go faster than I want to go then I let ACC take over. I just watch my speedometer to know when it's time to relax. If I'm in traffic I immediately turn it off or just push the brake because it's gonna be a miserable jerky ride.

Wonder if G05 fixed this crappy system.

The issue that I've seen is that it leaves too large of a gap in rush hour bumper to bumper traffic. Many vehicles move over into the gap leaving only inching up. Also, as mentioned above, it disengages after being at a complete stop for too long. It's not in tune for traffic jams imo.

I also do not like the abrupt acceleration in comfort or sport mode. However, I found that if I put it in ECO mode, it has smoother and more gradual accelerations.

What you asking for is traffic jam assistant, it wasn't official for US market but it can be retrofitted into your car. Uses same front radar and cameras etc. Check here:
