Hoping to get a "what's the best tune" update thread going..
I've read all the hype, all the pro's, all the cons. (Please correct any statements I make here, I'm still learning)
I've talked to a couple of you guys on here and you know who you are, I sincerely thank you for your guidance and time. It seems like the play for the F85 is a piggy back tune. On the E70, my Velos tune was KING. I was able to dust almost anything on the road and in 3.5 years I NEVER EVER had a problem. So big shout out to Velos for a sensational experience. That said, I am told that the F85 has a different way of tracking tunes. Meaning, engine blows up, dealer is able to identify that the car was tuned. From how I understand what I've read/been told, a piggy back is the safe way to get more power from these cars. The three "piggyback" tunes that stand out are Bootmod3, Racechip, and JB4. I reached out to JB4, and they are super local to me, but no CS. No way to get them on the phone. With Velos, Omar and the crew would troubleshoot in the middle of the night. Eurocharged, same thing, customer service was A+. Something uneasy about not being able to get a live person on the phone with these sensitive things. Today for the first time I heard the words Bootmod3 and "blown up motor" used in he same sentence and that obviously didn't sound exciting either. So that leaves Racechip. Anything I should know? Anything I'm missing from the other two mentions? Who has any updated information on any of the three tunes? Are you guys still super excited about the extra power? Any additional quirks as DeMuro would say? Has anyone tried one tune, and gone to another with a positive experience, or negative one? I'm assuming they're all making the same power +- 1%-2%-3%, I'm more curious about drivability and reliability. Thank you in advance for the education! |

If you have concerns about tuning your M and want piece of mind, have an authorized installer i.e. Center BMW, Sterling BMW or any authorized shop install the Dinan stage I or II piggyback. Plus it won't void your BMW factory warranty. Keep in mind that a use piggy comes with no warranty, only to the original purchaser.
This thread should be interesting. Better go get my

🤔...this seems like it's going to be an interesting read so I'm going to stick around for this.
Side note: Reading bootmod3 and blown motor in the same sentence gave me the chills because that's who I planned on going with if I do tune it.

One example of this is: the E70/E71, which Bootmod3 hasn't even created a tune for. Related to another tune perhaps? Coincidence? Wrong octane? Abuse? Maintenance history? Who knows. A couple of guys' were completely stock too. One BMW engine rebuilder recommends installing a 90C degree thermostat & switching to 5w-50 motor oil. Is this the answer? I have no idea. So many questions also. Waiting for others to chime in...

I think that engine builder you referred to is Troy Jeup who uses the thermostat and 5W-50 oil. But from what I know I think he recommends that for the NA S85 and S65 motors not the S63 unless he uses it for the S63 as well.

Yup I guess I can use it on both my cars! Wondering what you guys might think about this. Off topic to the original post but do you guys think his suggestion is good? I would assume BMW's engineering team would have come up with the most efficient system.

Check AA, ESS and VFE. You cant go wrong with any of those. I would keep AA and VFE as the top choices though, especially AA.
