Poking holes in stock exhaust
I recently saw that if you just want to make your exhaust louder, you just poke a hole in the stock exhaust?
is this true? Where do you poke the hole? what tools do you use? any input is appreciated

I wouldn't be poking holes in my exhaust, but if you wanna mess with yours, I guess its your call.
If you do not like it, you are stuck with it.

One old school way of making the exhaust louder was to run your car till the muffler gets hot, then sticking a water hose with water running into the exhaust tip. The hot fiberglass will disintegrate and voila, louder exhaust!
(some guy with an E46 M3 posted a vid on m3forum a couple years ago too) |

Just have a muffler shop hack off the stock exhaust and weld on a couple of glasspacks. It would probably sound better than you might think...

wouldn't it just sound like an exhaust leak? I guess if you want to drive around in a new car that sounds like it has an old rusted out exhaust system go for it.

It's not "just poke a hole in it"... it's a little more than that.
Below are two exampes of "modified" stock exhausts...first is my stock C5Z06's mufflers(which are Titanium) and the second is a Porsche 996TT's... In the Porsche 996TT world, a similar exhaust modification was done...but it entailed inserting a torch or router bit into the exhaust and opening up a "bypass hole"... as shown here... I was looking for pictures of the insides of the M3's exhaust to see if this would be a worthwhile modification. It could be as simple as inserting a router-bit into the exhaust tip and drilling a hole, but I'd need to see the inside of a stock can first... Anyone have a stock exhaust with the top cut off? Be good, TomK
