Not a lot of rear winter options
With the 315/35 20” wheel I am having a hard time finding a winter set up. Kumho has one. Pirelli but they are $700 Canadian. Any hints on how to locate these.

How do you feel about minus sizing to 19" tires/wheels? You'll probably get a few more selections...and they'll probably cost less, too.
Doing a quick search of dedicated winter tires using your model/model year and 20" tires on TireRacks website...I got: (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...SortCode=60200)
Then when I entered your vehicle info at the DiscountTireDirect.com: (https://www.discounttiredirect.com/f...ult/tires/sets) ... I see:
Did you try some of the Canadian national tire store chains to see what they offer?

I have found Toyo. Just now. Another shop called and said he had Kumho. But they don’t list a 315 rear. So maybe this guy is downsizing the width. Not a lot with this stagger.

The narrower the better for winter. Downsize to 19'' square setup - most probably rims+tyres will cost you less than 20'' tyres alone.

I was shocked at the price. $7-900 per tire for winter tires. We don’t get a lot of snow. If any. More cold. More rain. Started to consider an all season after the sticker shock of winter tires. 19”. Would that not look ridiculous. I find the 20” small

I don’t care how my car looks during the winter - all I care is safety. It will be covered in dirt and salt most of the time anyway.

Also, the minus size (to a 19" wheel/tire combo) also will give you a higher tire profile which helps with some protection against winter pot holes and road surface heaving. From inside the vehicle, you'll probably like the feel of the 19" set-up.
Dedicated winter tires/wheels is more of a function over form. Kind of reminds me of some friends that wouldn't wear a hat/cap when temps are below freezing...all because they didn't like the "look". I'd rather keep my head/ears warm than worry about how I look with a knit hat or cap on.

Winter tires aren't just for snow. A soft compound gets dramatically better traction on a cold wet road.

19" square is real good advice for winter wheels on the X5, especially if you live in a climate with real winters, snowy conditions. If you might get snow once or twice this winter, sometimes frost and slick roads, but mostly just cold...Well, wider winter tires might be fine. But wider tires won't have the same lateral grip on wintry roads as narrower will. If looks are still important, add spacers, or different offset rear wheels, but stay with same width. (My winter set up is bored out(rear hub only) OEM E71 19x9 wheels, with factory different offsets front and rear). Works good for me, and rear wheels don't look tucked into the body. Though I might still add spacers, now that I have flares. (If you have flares, stock 19"x9" ET48 stock wheels IMHO looks like you are driving on emergency spare tires at the rear, being so far tucked in.) But better be tucked and safe, no vehicle looks good sitting in the ditch (or worse) waiting on a tow truck.. |
