adding oil
My oil level is now at the half mark, (middle line) on the guage. In the manual it says that at the bottom line it would require 1lt or 1qt. Oil. But then in the paragraph, pg 205, it says add 1/2 qt. or the oil-monitor will be unable to display the new value reliably.
So my question is, is the manual saying to add just 1/2 qt first so the engine can read it correcly then add the other 1/2 if required? I'm assuming that at the half-mark of the oil-monitor it only needs 1/2qt or 0.5lt. Is that correct? As in the manual it states that at the minimum level, add 1qt or 1lt of oil. I think I'm reading it correctly but just want to know what you guys think. |

I would wait until the oil level is at the lowest reading. At this point a message will appear on your instrument cluster telling you to add a quart. Then add a quart so you don't overfill the engine. I haven't had to add any oil yet at 7200miles but I plan on following the manual.

Dam! Here in the UK at the BMW dealer I payed 32pouns that's about $60 for 2 liters(2qt)! I might have to figure out a way to order the castrol 10w-60 TSW oil from the States but normal air freight they won't ship oil. Maybe shipitApo.com will.

Just think what it would cost us in the U.S. with the exchange rate! LOL. It would be about $50/quart if we bought it there! LOL

Funny part is, if you ask, should get it for free to top off... at least in the US.

This is Europe pal, here they nickle and dime you to death. I asked and they said no. Anyway, the oil is in my garage and when it does drop, I just have to top-it-off without having to drive 15 miles and wait to have it done. Expensive though, that's for sure!
So today I added 1/2 qt or 0.5lt. Drove to work, and when the meter finally took a reading after warming up, it still read at the half mark. So I took another reading by pushing the button on the blinker/control as the book indicates. I was parked while it took the reading at idle and then the meter read full at the top hash mark. Several starts/drives later to the gym/home it read topped up so good to go now. So if you top off and it still reads inacuratly, just take another reading and site parked at idle so it can take an accurate reading. What the hell is so special about this TWS Castol oil anyhow? |
