Where’s the Compass?

No, I haven’t dug out the manual - yet. I’ve got a 2016 640 GC and I can’t figure out how to display a compass. Any suggestions? Other than RTFM?

I just cycle through the 'BC' options and it displays...

I think the OBC options selected by pushing the BC button on the tip of the turn indicator are selectable in iDrive. Go into SETTINGS in iDrive then look for OBC info and click/select for anything that would give you a list of OBC features to select from.

If its not there...if you have one of the newer iterations of iDrive (like NBT)...you may be able to add it (aka CODE it) using BimmerCode or one of the other coding applications/software.

Thanks, Q. I spoke with a BMW ‘genius’ today and he told me that the car didn’t have a compass display option. Pretty sure I have NBT. I’ll hook up my Bimmercode app and check it out.

There IS no compass.

Went through with bimmercode and dug around in my iDrive and discovered that my car has no compass display. I put my GPS map view into ‘facing north’ mode so now I’ll always know which direction I’m headed.

No auto trunk - no compass. What’s next?

May be wrong but I'm pretty sure that compass display relies on having xdrive fitted.

Hmmm...you may be right on this. I believe I just was reading about this not long ago on one of the forums...and now that you mention x-drive...I recall the discussion showing an X5 on the iDrive screen...as well as a compass located on the lower center of the instrument cluster.

And this was done using EXPERT MODE in BimmerCode. There was also a chart given as to what to do in expert mode. So if you look up one of the BMW coding forums...you should be able to find this info.

Another thing a can slightly recall is...the instrument cluster compass was found in the KOMBI module...and the compass (kompass) for the iDrive screen was found in the NBT module. But again, this was being coded using EXPERT MODE which means if you’re doing this...make sure you have it down for sure what you’re doing. Using expert mode isn’t for those that aren’t known for being precise in following instructions.
