Angry Bought Used '17 X5M - 3 hours later it doesn't start

Need some input from the group - I just picked up the 2017 X5M below with 48k miles and it had a Dinan Tune, Intake, Exhaust. It had all service records up to date from BMW in the Carfax. I literally picked it up at 7pm EST drove 25 miles to meet a friend at an event, came out to leave (its roughly 30 degrees here so it was pretty cold) and car started with a rough idle then shut off, it did this several times then wouldn't start for a while. I finally (after calling for a tow truck) tried one more time and it fired up like nothing ever was wrong before.

It had a "Drivetrain Malfunction: Driving possible" message in the iDrive and a CEL on the dash. I drove the car back to the dealer and left the key in the overnight box. I did have an OBD Scanner in my old car and I ran the codes - they're listed in pics and point to a Mass Airflow Sensor and possible fuel pump issue. Couple questions:
1) Has anyone experienced this kind of intermittent cold start rough idle and car shutting off? If so, what was the solution?
2) What would you do if you were me? Demand a refund and walk away? Demand they repair the car and keep it? Ask them to include a warranty given what just happened? Ask for price reduction and the above?

hi matey

i haven't personally experienced this issue specifically but maybe this video will help? it appears at cold temps you may get some start issues?

X5 not starting on cold mornings - he needed to warm up the fuel relay lol weird

also with those codes - don't get too worried just yet as they throw all sorts of codes due to battery / chainage errors

wait to see what the dealership says and go from there - hope it all works out

i found your car on this link https://www.carsforsale.com/used-car...tails/71993593
(i can remove this link if you like)

definately try and get ISTA+ and ENET loaded so you can yourself read more detailed codes... sometimes those phone apps are a good guide but with ISTA+ you can do much more

Thanks for the response. Yea that's the car. I had ISTA+ on a prior laptop but, haven't used it in forever and didn't have the cable/laptop with me so that was the best I could do.

Not at the "warm up the fuel pump relay" stage yet for a vehicle that is hours old (to me).

Well, I know this doesn't help with your issue, but the car looks really nice. Hoping it's an easy fix by the dealer and you can start enjoying the car. I'd wait to see how big the fix is before you pursue returning the car. Really could just be a small dumb thing that they may not have been aware of either. Good luck!

True - that's why i'm not roasting the dealer as if they were complicit in this happening. I realize these things can happen - especially in cold weather the BMWs aren't huge fans of cold starts anyway (at least my 335i's had some similar issues in the cold weather).

I know they bought it at auction in December for $51,900 so i'm clear that they had to buy it "as-is". Though it had good dealer maintenance history like I mentioned previously. Hopefully this is a fluke - i'm just not really sure whether to ride it out or to truly return it and get the CPO 2019 X5 M Sport that I still have a deposit on. Tough decisions to be made here...

I doubt dealer will do any price reduction or include warranty. Do you have any coverage now?

It's a 2017 with 48k miles so no coverage from original warranty and I didn't buy any extended warranty in the finance office.

Honestly a 50k M car with no warranty is a risk..I would've had a warranty lined up before l left the dealer - although some require a 1000/30 day waiting

See if the dealer is willing to cover some of the charges or repairs. Some places offer a 30 day repair promise or will help.

Unless your in-service date is somewhere in 2016 then you should still be in the 4YR/50K miles factory warranty parameters?

IMHO, go with the later model year with CPO. The one you took home was probably rode real hard and put away wet too many times. I did an '18 CPO & just extended the CPO & Maintaince. Some of the maintaince is hatefully priced, but nothing like an NON -Warranty repair

A friend of mine had the Dinantronics box and had issues with it, saying it kept giving him lots of errors/codes. I don't know if it's a common issue or a fluke with his unit but if this happens again, maybe try removing it and see if that'll solve the issue?

Not a pleasant experience. Sorry to hear it. I highly doubt the dealership will take the vehicle back, since the second you sign that paperwork and leave, it's yours, no matter what.

However, I doubt the dealership is interested in bad press. In other words: I'm sure they are willing to repair whatever went wrong within three hours to leaving the dealership. Perhaps ask for it to be taken back to the BMW dealership so the issue can be diagnosed and properly repaired without corners being cut? I'd think that's fair...

Looks like it was sold 10/2016, so just out of factory warranty. Bummer.

They are going to take the car back even though they found nothing wrong with their scan. They did try to use the "well the car is low on gas" (it said 48 miles to go when I left the car at the dealer) rationale and I asked them why i'd be that close to empty if I just bought the car 53 miles ago (pointing to them not filling it up with a full tank of gas). All in all they were fair about the situation and didn't opt for the "shady used car lot" tactic of "you bought it, your problem".

Nice. One less thing to worry about.

Glad for the resolution, but still frustrating given you have probably been searching for the right car for a while and thought you found it. Will you look for another one?

Glad the dealer hashed that out with you. Most dealers offer a 30 day/1000 mile drivetrain warranty with all used cars under 100k miles. That's the law in MA. Too bad you had issues - beautiful X5M w/great color combo! Best of luck on the next one. I'm lucky - apparently my 2016 X5M had a very late "In service date " so I have a few months left of warranty and maintenance on it! Dealer has been exceptional and I will probably extend the warranty on it.

Sucks. It must have been something minor. Battery sounded good cranking. Loss of communication somewhere perhaps...
