Engine Overheated & Code U019F (2017 X5 xDrive35i)
Hi,
I have a 2017 X5 xDrive35i with about 55k miles. Today was a hot day (95+) and I was getting on and off a few highways several times, and for full disclosure, basically flooring the engine on the merge in (I know..). Unfortunately the car threw off a overheating engine warning and advised me to pull over when safe and let the engine cool down. The temperature gauge on the dash was at or under the middle mark, so no signs of anything excessive there, but I know that reads oil temperature rather than coolant. I let the car cool for 10 minutes, started it back up, everything seemed OK, but within a few minutes it happened again. The car limited me to 30mph and I was on roads where everyone is flying at 80+ so I made my way to a safe side road to wait it out. Tried the same thing again but let the car cool for 20+ minutes and the same thing happened again, so I decided to get it towed back out of safety. While waiting for the tow truck I turned the car on and it was fine at idle - no warnings or anything. I have a feeling that if I started to drive it, it would have just happened again. When I got home I pulled the engine code and it read U019F which google says is "Lost Communication With Engine Coolant Pump Control Module". Anyone have this before? Any idea what the problem ended up being? Also, the car is a certified pre-owned, do you think something like this is covered by the warranty? Thanks all. |

Since it is CPO bring it in to the dealer and let them deal with it. If you want to troubleshoot yourself start with checking coolant levels first, but it sound like your coolant pump is not working properly so might want to check fuses just in case.

Sounds like the right call. I just want to make sure something like this is covered by the certified warranty and not end up towing the car over there and having it stuck with them at some insane price to fix it out of pocket!
I did some more troubleshooting on my own. The car has sat in my garage for a few hours. No engine light or anything when I turned it on. Drove around for a bit, got the "Engine Temperature: Drive moderately" warning and then shortly after the "Engine Overheated: Stop carefully" notice again. Went to the deeper menu items and coolant temp was 125 C when the overheated message occurred so something water pump related sounds right. Also, the engine fans were running hard and much louder than normal, even before the warnings started popping up. |

Water pump is toast. Not uncommon for the N55, albeit perhaps a bit early at 55k miles. Still, within the "I may randomly stop working zone" Doubt it would be covered by CPO. Id call your dealer and ask.
Parts cost as below from FCP Euro. Not a hard DIY job, just time consuming. Lots of good videos on WP/Thermostat replacement on YouTube for the N55. Cheers. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...11517632426kit |

Unless terms have changed recently, this would definitely be covered by CPO. https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...NotCovered.pdf
Don't keep driving it, it may cause more damage due to overheating which won't be covered under CPO, as it can be characterized as neglect. |

Got the same issue - U019F, dealership quoted:
- Water Pump replace - $1553.36 - Spark Plugs replace - $1049.70 - Replace torn oxidized group strap at left rear of muffler - $129.48 Seems like a bit to much? Should I find some shop? Any recommendations in north Illinois area? |
