DIY: Sunglasses tray insulation

Hello.
First, English is not my native language, and at this moment i try to learn it (sorry for my mistakes).

I live in a sunny area, and when I took out my glasses I always had to put them in the AC, or put them aside to cool down. That makes me mad
I have a 2015 F15 3.0d, with sunglasses case in the ceiling (near the rear view mirror ).

So for this reason, I proceeded to insulate it.
I brought this Adhesive Fiberglass Sheet from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did not find any tutorial on the internet on how to remove the glasses box. I try to press down on the inner clips without success. So I proceeded to remove the overhead light console. Super easy. Remove the trim cover for sunroof console, then press the two inner clips, and remove the cables. I could not see the clips in their entirety, so I remove the screws that hold a white plastic base (2x torx T25) ; and the screw of "counter-bearing for sun visor" ( 1x torx T20 each side) to be able to have full access to the internal area of the ceiling. On the front side of the white piece, I found the two clips that hold the sunglasses case.

Then I cut a piece of fiberglass approximately 8 x 8 inches and placed it on the roof metal.

Then, with the case (box), I proceeded to insulate all of the external side.

Then I put everything back in place.

I hope it can be of help to someone who has the same problem

Good idea. My sunglasses don't fit in that holder so I don't have the same issue you do.

How did that work out?

I happen not to have a panorama roof on a black car and on sunny days the headliner gets really hot, which is far from pleasant. Maybe that's the way.

You are lucky that you don't have the panoramic sunroof. That thing allows insane heat into the cabin. You can feel the big difference just by holding your hand on the sunshade vs any other part of the roof.

I recently had a tint shop put the darkest heat blocking tint they had on it which did help. Even so, I am still entertaining the idea of getting some black vinyl and blocking it out entirely.

The pano roof is the worst feature of the car. Really sucks that it is standard on all US cars.

You can probably diy those reflective adhesive on the roof glass. No one really sees how it looks anyway

Truth. W/ pano roof my glasses get ridiculous hot up there. I like the tint idea. Might do a limo tint up there if it works. Wish I could insulate the top of the roof sliding panels but I'd worry about added weight or strain on the sliders. BMW really never has gotten their pano roof game up to par. Our Kia Optimas (2011 & 2013) had better pano roofs.

Tint does make a noticeable difference to the sunroof. If you just want to try it out before spending the money for a pro job, Walmart sells rolls of static cling 5% limo tint for like $12. Cut a couple pieces to size and stick them to the glass.

It will be full of bubbles, look like crap and prob not a good idea opening the roof with it in place, but will give you an idea of what the heat reduction will be.

@foo2002 I tried to start this job but I don't see where you found the "2 inner clips" after taking off the black trim pieces around the buttons on the overhead console. The white piece doesn't want to pop off, unless I'm not using enough leverage or force as I've been taking it easy having just had a bad experience removing trim on my other vehicle.

Can you take a pic of the console and mark where you found the tabs and the screws to remove?

I use a metal piece to click on the clips. In the photo you can see a marked space where you must insert the metal piece to the sides, it is a little bit harder, and pull.

Our new Volvo xc90 T8 has the best pano roof shade ever. Semi transparent off white breathable material that reflects most sun and can be left closed with roof open and still allow a breeze in. Beautiful design as is the vehicle in general.

Still havent heard if this actually made a difference.

As far as sun roof. I had XPEL Prime XR plus put on it and haven't had any serious heat issue from it. Stuff is a game changer.
