Question X5 2018 CPO - Bad MPG

BMW X5 2018 CPO - Bad MPG

Hello,

This is my first time owning an X5, I live in NYC. I bought the car from the dealership and I’m totally in love with it it’s just that I was wondering how much MPG should I be having for city driving? The computer is listing that I have 11mpg even if have enabled eco mode. I’m not an aggressive driver as well since I’m still fairly new to driving. Can somebody let me what is the cause of why the mpg is really low and I searched in google the mpg of x5 2018s, it’s around 18-21 for city but mine is just bad. Could there be an issue under the hood that I’m missing?
engine 3.0 v6 6L

TIA,
KDR

Something is definitely not right if you're getting 11 MPG in eco-mode with the inline 6. I get better than that with a V8 in sport mode, city driving.

I wouldn't spend too much time troubleshooting it yourself or on this forum, I'd take it back to the dealer since it's CPO'd and sounds like you just recently bought it?

Hang in there, these are great vehicles, hopefully this doesn't scare you away.

If it's CPO, and you still have warranty available, then you should drive it right back to the dealer.

How many miles have you driven since buying it or how many miles if you reset the trip computer? A bunch of short test drives likely flooring it before you bought it could throw it off or if you've only taken short trips in NYC.

I rarely get less than 18mpg mixed city / highway in sport in my 50i

What is your average MPH? If you post that along with your average MPG...it would make it more clear as to what type of driving conditions you are in.

If your avg MPH is low...then your avg MPG will usually be low, too. A low MPH is indicative of city/urban driving conditions with a lot of stop-n-go situations. Thus your average MPG will suffer. If your avg MPH is higher...that would indicate consistent speeds with less high RPM situations & less braking (highway/boulevard/parkway driving situations with no lights or timed lights). Thus your average MPG usually goes up.

Also, if you recently reset the MPG counter and you've been driving in an urban/city or stop-n-go traffic situation...your avg MPG may reflect that very specific driving scenario...and not what a normal MPG would be for that vehicle with a more expanded driving scenario with urban & highway driving. Also, if you start the vehicle and let it sit idling for long periods of time (the old fashioned "warm-up" like when cars had carburetors)...this could also drag your avg MPGs down.

BTW...just a friendly FYI...you don't have a V6 engine...you have an I6 (inline 6 cylinder) engine.

I'd get correct reading and not rely on the trip computer.
Fill up the tank, reset the trip meter, burn through the tank, fill up and do the math of what you had to put back in vs how far you want. This will let ya know, but 11 in ECO is junk. Be advise, ECO does not charge the battery that much, so something to consider long term.

About the X5;

You have the trip computer within the iDrive and you also have the one on the gauge cluster, you can cycle through it by hitting the BC button on the end of the turn signal stalk, until you see your MPG / L per 100K reading. Further holding down the BC button will reset this. This is a constant monitor of MPG, not affected by any other parameters.

I use the trip meter in iDrive predominately for weekend trips, towing. ect, one off things where I care about fuel econ.
I keep the dash one running as a cumulative, and, normally reset it between winter and summer. Helps me keep a general average to spot any issues.

On my '15 x35i, I primarily drive in comfort and in summer with the OEM 20's I get 11L / 100KM or 21.5MPG.
Winter with the 19's, more idling, ect I get about 12.5/13 L/100KM or 18/19 MPG. This is on 91 octane.

I'd do the hand calcs then talk to the dealer if things are bad.

It is low.... but if you are doing a lot of cold start, idling, short trips or stop and go traffic, that will cause you MPGs to take a hit.

Hello,

I have driven the car around 300-400 miles ever since I got it. Mostly city driving since I haven't had the chance to go out of town yet.

My MPG counter has recently been reset since I had my dash coded and it got flashed or upgraded so I could use the full screen Apple Car Play. Might be a reason why my MPG also went down since I only did city driving after it got reset. Thank you for letting me know about the engine! I didn't know it wasn't a V6 but a I6! I appreciate it.

I also have been doing cold start and idling for like 2-3 mins every time I let the car sit for too long or every morning. I guess I didn't have to do that to new cars as per google. Might be another reason why my mpg took a hit.

Lastly, I haven't had the chance to finish all the gas in the car ever since. I've been refilling gas whenever I hit half. I'll try to refill to full and reset my MPG.

I've attached my MPG readings please see below.

Thank you,
KDR

If it is a V8 then those numbers are correct. Not too far off from V6 either. These cars SUCK in the city but highway they are great. On my 50i, I probably did 12-14 city and 22-25 highway

Hello,

Thank you for your input. It’s an x35i - 3.0 L 6 cylinder. I’m looking forward for snow season going to get more trips doing snowboarding! Hoping MPG goes up!!

Another friendly FYI - you don't need to let the car idle for 2-3 minutes following the cold start, start it and start driving gently till the engine gets to the operating temperature.

OMG...averaging 9.1 MPH? Yessir, that will definitely bring your avg MPG down.

if you can get to a point where your avg MPH increases...then you will also see your MPG rise.

I rarely get a chance to drive on a highway...my daily driving is all city and my avg MPH is usually in the low 20s. You can see in the screen shots below how the average MPH can affect the average MPG:

This is the display from my 650ix w/N63TU V8 engine:
  • city driving - 23.1 MPH with 16.3 MPG
  • highway driving 56 MPH with 23.2 MPG
