RR AIRBAG - Dealer wants whole Strut

Came in for oil change and informed them the rear sags. Tech found RR airbag leaking from spray test. Have warranty so not worried. It was approved but warranty said dealer ordered a whole strut, not the air bag, as the SA and Tech said needed in report.

Common issue and everyone just changes the airbag, not sure why strut is needed.

So simple case of dealer greed? Part is on order from Germany.

Do you have to pay for it? If not let them do it.

Also, are you over 80,000 kms? If so, technically the dealer should replace both rear struts.

It is odd that they want to replace it as the air bag and the schock are not a matched pair or anything…

I am not paying. 32k miles. Yes very odd. I will be asking for all old parts. I do not trust them. Probably got paid for strut but only replacing air bag.

I agree, struts should only be replaced in pairs as a worn shock paired with a new one can induce different rebound rates which affects stability and safety. I would certainly insist that if they are going to replace one, they BOTH should be done. It would not be hard to find data supporting this.
Best of luck.

BMW states that if struts have more than 80,000kms, specifically, then you have to replace both. 32k mile is only only ~51k km. Technically, they don't have to replace both in this case. It would have to be a goodwill issue.

Good points. That may be the official BMW procedure, but extended warranty (aftermarket) would only cover what has failed, so even if it was the RR strut, only that strut would be approved for replaced...as far as I know, they usually aren't that nice to go ahead to cover the opposite side.

Still do not have an definite answer from the $tealer on why they are replacing my entire strut instead of only the airbag. They are still waiting for the part.

Spoke with dealer. Now they are saying my X5 does not have any sort of air suspension LOL.

I 100% have EDC with rear air suspension….

To them, my RR electric damper strut is "my issue" and causing the sag. What a joke. I'll be reporting this dealer and notified the warranty not to pay this dealer a penny. I will relocate to a Indy shop and have order the correct part.

What happened with this? I assume the dealer knows what they were talking about. They don't want you coming back with the car sagging again. No X5 has struts in the rear only shocks and an air bag. So the terminology is getting quite confusing in your posts.

Terminology is actually clear. What happened is I moved the car to a Indy shop and the RR airbag was replaced. Car is fine. This was another case of right customer and wrong fraudulent dealer.

If dealer proceeded with repair, it would have been INCORRECT. The strut was not at fault, it was the airbag.
