mspeed you (or your friend) need to contact your DMV and get the title sorted. You (or your friend) aren't the first person where a company that held a lien/title has gone out of business. According to a reddit post from 2 years ago, for the state of VA (I know you're in CA but maybe similar laws), you can contact the State Corporation Commission and get proof that the company no longer exists and provide that proof to the DMV to get a clear title without lien. Might be the same process in CA but I'd contact the CA DMV to find out.

Depending on the state and the law, whomever buys this car _might_ also owe the unpaid balance of the lien. I'd 100% stay away unless the title was sorted out.

Edit: Might be interested once title issue is cleared up.
