M50D Turbo blown and white smoke :/
Well looks like a turbo (which one :/)has gone on the X5 M50D. Lots of white smoke and loss of power/limp at around 30mph. Anyone else had similar and know the - already know high - cost to replace or any advice?

M50D Turbo Blown
Same thing just happened to mine...limp mode...loads of white smoke out the exhaust and coming out of the engine when the oil cap was removed. Have to take off the top of the engine, remove sumo etc (removing gearbox) to see if metal fragments entered the engine. Not cheap to fix - $5K to remove everything before anything is even fixed. You'd think BMW will come to the party and cover a significant amount of the repair bill because, really, it's a pretty disastrous situation and something you would not envisage when buying an M50d.

Had the BMW indi technician hook it up to a computer and that was what it was showing at the time. Only going to get the whole thing taken out and looked at once they have done a thorough inspection though to ensure it is nothing else 'a bit easier' :/. Mine is a 2015 and has done 65K.

Sorry for the delay team. She is back on the road. The moral of the story is don't miss the oil service because you think you aren't driving much in COVID lockdown. We stripped the whole engine down, cleaned everything, recon on the turbo's, DPF, the works. Friends business did the work and just had a 500 mile oil change now and a few good run outs and is going beautifully. Not cheap but a brilliant car so swallow it up LOL.

Basically it was throwing tar through the engine is the best way of describing it. The DPF was black with oil, inlets to turbo's black amongst a list of things. We could have just tried a patch job but once it was stripped down it was best to go full out with looking at everything. Last thing we wanted was putting it all back together and it breaking down in 6 months - and then going again.

How often do you change oil and what oil do you use?
What's your driving routine, mostly city with lots of traffic, start-stop system active etc? What's the mileage of the car? |

You change your oil yearly? Oh hell no. You need to do that every 5 to 6000 miles.

I change top level LM oil with OEM filter every 6-9k miles depending on the driving routine (6k when mostly city, 9k when traveling) - "mostly yearly" is asking for very expensive problems. |

Very unhappy user here ;(
X5 f15 2014 M50d 132000 km Loss of power, followed by engine stop. No bang, nothing. No errors on board. First impression: broken turbo(s) with missing metal -> into the engine, clogged up gas cooler. Now I gave them permission to open the engine (500 eur job), but the mechanic said to me it’s not the first car with those problems and it will cost me more than 20 000 eur to fix it If this is the case, I’ll scrap the car… |

Oil does not really count in this matter.
I have 10 years free oil and filter change from bmw. I’ve just talked with my bmw dealer and is sad. The small turbo exploded, damaging the other two turbos. Oil in the intercooler and in the “catalyst”. The damage is about 16000 eur for now Another 2000 euro to open the engine, to check cilinder 5&6 If the cylinders are shot, I need a new engine. So is very close to scrap. |

Understood - from my experience, the BMW maintenance routine is simply insufficient for these engines long term - I think you'll find many people on this forum are doing oil changes far more than what's specified (among other things). In any case, that's a real disaster for you - seriously sorry to hear that. On the positive side, maybe BMW (Europe?) might be willing to help you by sharing the costs if you push hard enough…the car itself can go another 136,000 kms with a new or rebuilt engine, no problem.
