HUD Disappeared…

On my way to wash, I noticed that my HUD was not projecting. Hit the dash switch a few times and nothing changed. Turned it off, washed it, and 5 minutes later started up and it was - and still is - back. Anyone else experience this?

That's a first I've seen that issue.
Maybe a fuse blew?

I'm sure a quick diagnostic check via ISTA will pin point the problem.

I had this three to four years ago, same symptoms as yours. Ignition off-on did not help, but ignition off, waiting a couple minutes, ignition on cured it. Happened only once, no problems since then.

The switch is far right above your left knee.

No mention if you were wearing sunglasses at any point. If you were and they were polarized…then that could have been the culprit. Then after removing the polarized sun glasses, the HUD reappears.

Haha! First thing I checked. That happened to me when I picked up the car from a body shop.

I had bought a pair of Maui Jims (Polarized) and afterI left the shop I started to turn around, furious that they had screwed up my HUD. Took the shades off for some reason and poof! HUD back!

This time was a bit different. But now HUD is back and in three drives working flawlessly. 🤞 My dash winked out a couple of times as well, but after a restart it came back as well. Ghost in the machine, perhaps?

Things slide into the space and block it too.

Mine is currently doing exactly as you describe. Sometimes it works fine and others it won’t and when it has been left for approx ten minutes it resets and works. I have had a software update and no change and when it doesn’t work there are no fault codes present and no communication errors. I have a used unit ready to fit but it is a full dash out job and recoding so not rushing to do it. I have noticed there is a wiring loom repair kit available and think I will try this next. Sometimes it will be good for days and others it happens daily. The only thing I have identified is it seems to fail more when the interior of the car is hot. Also when it does not work when I go into settings and select hud the menu is illuminated and when I switch off the hud on the switch it greys out. This indicates the control unit is working and it is a fault on the hud. When you start the car the hud moves the mirrors through the range of movement and the hud activates. My gut feeling is the hud is not cycling properly when it’s hot and when the car has been driven and the interior temp has reduced and the ignition has been switched off long enough for the car to reset it then cycles again and works. Be interested in how you get on as very limited information available.
Cheers
Jim

Thanks, Jim. Since that one day I haven’t had it disappear again. If it does, I’ll let you know!

Hopefully you will be all good. When mine did it the first time it was okay for a couple of weeks and it’s just gradually got worse.
Cheers

Keep an eye on this:

If it happens again it is worth checking your battery voltage at rest. BMWs will cut off the HUD if it thinks it’s not getting enough voltage for the main (essential) systems in the car.

In addition, if you start getting the AC controls switching on and off with the HUD (and a Tyre Pressure Monitor Failure), then it is almost likely a bad RDC module. They all share the same comms lines.

I had heard this but mine can cut off after it has been running for a lengthy period then stood for approx 20 minutes where the voltage should be more than sufficient. It is generally good first thing in the morning after standing all night and no issues with any other controls. Always good to hear other thoughts so appreciate the response.
Thanks
Jim
