No.
Plug a USB stick, use the audio jack in the auxiliar port, use a Y (lightning USB + audio jack) BMW cable to your phone, or use a Tune2Air for Bluetooth streaming. Last option is the best.

I got a great little thing off of Amazon that works perfectly. Search “MASO Car Audio Input Adapters Bluetooth 4.0 USB Music Interface MP3 AUX Cable Adapter for BMVV AC926”

Yup calls only. Above methods are all fine. Aux cable is best for fidelity.

What everyone has said is not true. I thought I was imagining things as I could have sworn I was able to play music from my phone via Bluetooth. So I just went out to my car to test it out. And yup, I was able to play music from my S8 via Bluetooth through my factory sound system.

How I set it up is to hit the TEL button on the iDrive controller. Move to the menu option for Bluetooth Phones and select that option. You'll see all the phones that are paired to your car's system. Highlight the specific phone you want to set up. Then push the Option button on your iDrive controller. Another menu comes up and then scroll down to Configure and select that. You'll be given a number of options to select. One of them will say Audio. Highlight and select that option and then scroll down to OK and select. Now the phone is set up to stream audio (music) via Bluetooth.

You can also see if your phone/factory system is set up for Bluetooth audio as when you see your phone in the list of Bluetooth phones, there will be a musical note next to it that will either be greyed out (meaning the phone is capable of it but not set up) or it'll be white meaning it is set up for audio.

Be warned, the fidelity of the music over Bluetooth is not that great. That forced me to use my iPod as my music source via the console USB port.

I don't know if it's model year specific for this functionality or if there was some option I had to have to get this. But my car is a 2013 with the Tech package. I have also updated the firmware to the head unit.

Could’ve saved a lot of typing and grief by just saying “what everyone said is true. It’ll only work if you buy a newer car that has a Combox like mine, but those are the options you have for your 2008”.

I did. No where did he say what year his car was. So maybe you should read the thread too. I put up a caveat as to how mine is newer and how to go about it if his car is newer. Based on what I've seen in this thread, you all assumed he has an older car.

My 2013 128i Msport with Nav, iDrive, and Harman/Kardon plays music from my iPod Classic 160GB beautifully in my car. iDrive also gives you Music Collection so you can download music from CDs to the car's hard drive in a compressed format. iPod is better, but it's a car, after all, and H/K makes it sound as nice as I need it to. Bluetooth only makes it worse.

The thing about downloading music from a CD to the internal hard drive is that you have to download the entire CD. You can't pick and choose which songs you want from the CD.

But you can go back into the Music Collection and delete individual tracks or the complete CD. I'm old-school and like to listen to an entire album work of an artist. I figure they took the time to create their vision, the least I can do is listen to it in the order they intended. I suppose a lot of that comes with age versus short-term streaming and individual purchases of digital tracks, but then I also prefer the CD with liner notes versus any digital download. Given the choice, I'd always take the LCI iDrive version on an E82 over the non-iDrive version, especially for the way music is handled.

i see music as one of the purest forms of art, not a tool of my convenience!!

Actually the firefly dongle looks good. I have tried other singles BT/Aux dongles which never worked well. I'd love to ditch my aux cable.

I don't think you'll regret it. That thing has been awesome for me for years. It fits perfectly under the armrest - I never see it or even think about it. It just connects automatically when I get in.

If you don't haver the nav system you will only be able to use bluetooth for calls, not music.
You'll need some other way to stream music as suggested here.
Honestly I haven't found anything that works well.

As mentioned above, the Firefly and new Firefly LDAC work seamlessly for streaming audio. FWIW, FLAC over Bluetooth sounds much better than MP3 and LDAC can stream up to 990kbps. While not the 1411kbps of CDs, it's still pretty good.

I do almost wish I had ordered the CD changer for some of my "special" music though.
