M Sport Steering Wheel Vibration/Buzzing *Solved*

The Lane departure vibration unit is the culprit (kinda). Actually, it's the silver clip that snaps over the top of the motor which holds it inside the steering wheel. It will vibrate against the inside plastic of the steering wheel on a rough portion of road and will drive you bonkers. The solution is to get rid of the silver clip and either super glue or JB weld the unit on the mount upon which it rests. You don't need much just enough to hold it from moving. This will save you $1200 on a new M Steering wheel which will end up doing the same thing if you have a lane departure system in it. I have attached the photos. If you need more info feel free to PM me.

That sort of thing would drive me insane. Hope to never have to need this but a great lil nugget of knowledge.

Thank you for this! I think I might just remove it.

It was still vibrating even if you turned Lane Departure warning OFF? Or was it vibrating due to that feature being ON?

Also curious. I have a vibration coming from this area that I haven't been able to identify yet. It occurs with lane departure on or off. It sounds different than when the lane departure warning is actively buzzing. Sounds like this may be the culprit.

Yes, the clip will still vibrate with Lane Departure off.

Mine did this really bad when the car was about 2 years old, BMW replaced it and after about another year it did it again, so they replaced it again! It has just started making the noise again and I never drive with the lane departure on at all - it is such a stupid idea in the first place in my opinion.

I guess the only question I have is how do you get to it in the first place?
