Front Brake Pads iDrive Mileage Question - Odd behaviour, any suggestions?

Hi all,

I have a 2018 F15 X5 X40d and I'm the first owner.

Firstly, I just want to say I've read a lot of the existing threads and watched YouTube Videos. I've also done my own coding in the past so I'm not a complete novice.

I'll try to keep this brief:
  1. I had the Front and Rear Brake Pads & sensors replaced by BMW in September 2022 at 19,363 miles.
  2. I haven't driven much due to longterm sickness and since that service i've only done 1,315 miles.
  3. Rear pads still showing more than 14,000 miles left on them.
  4. However, Front pads are now showing 3,200 miles?
  5. I rang BMW and they admitted that the fronts shouldn't be showing 3,200 miles as they wouldn't have gone down that much in less than a year and in only 1,300 miles of driving so they said it needs to be reset.
  6. I resetted the service indicator myself via the Trip computer button and followed the correct procedure i.e. door closed, parking brake off, ignition on etc and I got a message saying "Front Brake Pads Reset Successful".
  7. But, and this is where I'm confused. It said it reset successfully BUT the mileage countdown is still showing 3,200 miles?
  8. Now if I go back in to the Trip computer service reset menu, it now says Front Pads reset unavailable?

Is there any way to reset the countdown mileage on the front pads to make it more in line with the rear pads i.e. 14,000 miles? Or, does it sound like a faulty sensor for the front pads?

Somewhere else I read that 14,000 to 3,200 miles is just an arbitrary countdown and then it pauses the countdown at this milestone until the sensor is actually triggered then it begins counting down again?

Any insight would be really useful!

UPDATE:

I took the car to my local BMW Main Dealer today and they've booked it in the workshop for Tuesday 4th July to have the service technicians have a look at it for free! So let's see what they come up with...I'll keep you all updated

You’re probably going to need to hook up to diagnostic equipment at this point to do a reset to get a better result of approximate mileage. You should have taken the dealership’s offer (if it was free).

There is something designed into the cluster reset procedure to prevent owners with “too-early-reset syndrome”. There is a minimum requirement that must be met on some service resets.

Hey!

Thanks for the reply.

The last sentence in the section you haven't highlighted might be my issue? Since no sensor has physically been replaced since September 2022 when the pads were actually done then perhaps for the Brake Pads to be reset successfully either the sensor needs to be plugged out and back in, or replaced entirely?

I was about to ask this question-was the sensor replaced or they reused old one?

Well when I got the front and rear pads done in September 2022 by BMW main dealer here in London (and they charged me for sensors) i'm assuming they used new ones? (I hope so! lol)

I’d check that front pad wear sensor. It sounds suspect. There isn’t much too them and can get damaged and trigger the service light.

Easy to check and replace for DIY’er.

Check your paperwork and make sure sensor was included.
