Unfortunately, I'm thinking the author misunderstood some of the press info. Can't remember where, but I've seen the traction control system referred to as an approximation of an LSD on the car. The idea is that the TC applies individual brakes when it senses one wheel is rotating faster than the other. So, yeah, it accomplishes the same end result as an LSD (both wheels rotating at the same speed) but probably not as effectively.

The DSC system on the 135i Coupe is designed specifically for performance-oriented driving. For instance, the accelerator pedal has a quicker response rate and electronic rear brake management is used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns.

LSD vs. Rear Brake Management
Although I'm pretty confident that the rear brake management system will do a reasonable simulation of LSD in limited use, I can't wait to see what kind of impact this has on the longevity of the rear brakes. Is any other manufacturer using a similar system and if so what has been the impact on the wear of the brakes?

I'm already speculating if the wonderful E46 M3 LSD dif will bolt up to the 135i subframe. Oh well, I'll have a whole warranty to drive through before I worry about that.

I hate the new hatch STi...
It wouldn't make any sense for a 2 door either, they are rally vehicles, not sports coupes. Now an EVO engine and drivetrain in an Eclipse is something that would sell like hotcakes. Back on topic: I found this on the BMWusa website press release: Quote:
This doesnt make any sense as I have no idea what a "helical" bearing is (I am a former bearing engineer) I assume thay mean helical gears with doublerow angular contact ball bearings...

The good news is that you can buy LSD for 1500.00 from quaife. Assuming it's the same rearend as the 335i.
Probably not much more then it would be as a option from the dealer. I guess you might void your warranty, but probably not. |

The official Sti pix have not been released...I saw what might be a photoshop, but it actually made the new Impreza bodystyle look good IMO. The fender wells were more aggressive and the stance looked wider (kit). I liked it.

Sigh... second car I'll be buying that'll need an immediate must-have mod. My current GTI came jacked up like a 4x4 on US-market specific springs to guarantee a 5 star crash rating. BMW needs to get over their rule about M-only LSDs.

BMW bent that rule with MINI. I am wondering if X-Drive would be just as good as an LSD. Anybody know? More importantly, have there been any discussions about a 135xi?

It would be a dream if it came with one, but it would definately be against all marketing logic.
The 335i is a hair slower that the E46 m3.. and purposefully so, they didnt want it to be quicker...and LSD would have gave it the advantage. It also came detuned from factory, as to not rival the E92 M3 so closely. Adding an LSD to that equation would make the cars alot harder to choose from to the idiot office jerk that only looks at 0-60 times. Now imagine if the 135i which, (unless BMW decides to be punks and makes it purposefully slower, however they shouldn't worry as it is a different market of ppl.) should beat the 335i without a doubt, had an LSD, it would be a 0-60 4.5 second car.... WOW! im already getting excited! LSD, vishnu, 3" TBE, = 400rwhp 0-60 3.9-4.0secs and using an ET Calculator i got 11.8!!! C6 Z06 goodday SIR!!! (okay maybe im getting ahead of myslef, but wow. $40K + $10K mods = Quick, balanced, and agile sex! |
