The Window Tint Thread
Since there isn't any window tint thread with appreciable info in it, lets make one!
Existing threads on tint: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...highlight=tint http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...highlight=tint I've found a couple of unique window tint products that I am considering. I would like to maintain a classy, non blacked out look, but black on black is going to be hot in the summer and I'm not garaging the car so privacy is also a consideration. I'm looking into ceramic tint and also a product called V-Kool (http://www.v-kool-usa.com/automotive.html) that has low tint but blocks most UV (i.e. heat). Also interested in Huper Optik (http://www.huperoptikusa.com/consumer_auto.cfm). I'm worried about what this stuff will look like 3-4 years down the road. Anyone have any experiences with UV blocking tint and tint in general? I found good info at http://www.tintcenter.com/ |

my a6 has 25% on the front sides and 5% the rest if you want to see an example. I think I will be going 25% all around on my 1er.

I want a very light tint ... probably doing 50% 3M color-stable all around.
If you have CA you might want to investigate metallic tints ... not sure if there is a problem there or not.

Huper Optic FTW... great stuff... not too dark, great heat prevention... does not hinder radar...
but is not cheap either and the installer must be good... because it so think its a PITA to install in cars

About how much would a window tint cost? I have a family friend who used a guy to tint both of his new CTS's and it looks really good, the guy will come to your home, wash the windows really good, and tint them for like $200. He even did an IR temperature reading and it showed about a 20 degree difference with and without tint. I will have to see what product the guy uses, maybe I can have him install one of the recomended products I find...

My RX-8 has Huper Optik ceramic on it - 4 years of Florida sun and it looks just like new.
It's pricier than metallic (not quite 2x the price), but the RX-8's sat nav antenna is inside under the rear window shelf so you can't use metallic tint. This won't be a problem with the 1's so I'll likely go with metallic this time around. |

Anyway the place you mentioned above was really good. They did a good job and they know their stuff. They do clear-bra too and depending on their estimate I'll probably let them install that as well. Anyway Huper 40% looks nice and that shop is a good one fwiw. thnx!

I think I'm gunna go with 60 or 70 from the Huper Optiks (I know, 70 is stock tint) but I want the red leather to show through but maintain the inside of the car cooler.
99% blockage of the UV rays will help protect the leather right? from fading? |

It's additive, keep in mind, so 70 on 70 = 49%. Also, most cars come with 100% UV blockage from the factory (on all windows).
