BMW 1-Series reliability
I wanted more up-to-date auto reliability information that included actual repair rates. So in late 2005 I started conducting reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute repair rates that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so it's possible to track cars closely as they age.
Thanks to the help of this forum's members, we had a quick result for the 1, and have been continuing to update the results quarterly. Additioinal participants are always helpful--we especially need more for the 2009. Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter. To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the 1, free of charge. Thanks, I appreciate it. Many people would like reliability info on the 1, and this will help me provide it.
The follow-up email goes out today, and this is the last time this month I'll include new members in the survey. 16 owners have signed up so far. If a few more could be included in this survey, that would make a full result in August more likely. Vehicle reliability research |

We've been thoroughly without profit so far...
The site is not technically a non-profit, though, and my wife won't let me keep doing this unless it eventually provides some income. Essentially, I figure that if I provide an outstanding resource the income will eventually take care of itself. Membership will always be free for those who participate. FWIW, all "non-profit" means is that there are no shareholders. The employees of non-profits still earn salaries, sometimes high salaries. |

It now appears we'll have an initial result in November, with updates every three months after that.
We will need more participants for that November result to not be aseterisked for a marginal sample size. Vehicle reliability research |

Thanks, I appreciate it.
The 1 didn't make it into this month's results, but could make it into the November set. A few more participants would help. Vehicle reliability research |

At work I am able to view 1addicts, but bimmerfest is blocked, so I wasn't able to post this last night. Many already know this, but I think those who are coming to BMW from other brands and expect a perfectly running car with no maintenance cost for 150k will be disappointed. Check out this link (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=195771) for those who may have second thoughts at the prospect of maintenance. Specifically the second half of number 2 says it all. I know this thread was about reliability, but some confuse any maintenance with an unreliable car. I love BMWs and they are great, but like a woman worthy of keeping for the long term, requires lots of love and care.

The 1-Series will be in the November results, but with a marginal sample size.
With more participants, we could provide more precise results. Vehicle reliability research |

We now have an initial result. Not quite enough responses for a full result--that will come in February, assuming a few more owners participate.
Based on the current marginal sample size, the 1-Series appears to have a worse than average repair rate, just under 100 successful repair trips per 100 cars per year. This is puzzling, since the same stat for the 2008 3-Series is 40. No common problem area is evident in responses. Given the much lower number for the related 3, and the small sample size, I suspect that the February result will be lower (i.e. fewer repairs). The more participants we have, the more precise that result will be. So hopefully more owners will join and participate. I just signed up. I noticed it asked me which country I lived in so I put Belgium. But then at the end it said it was US Market only. I have a 123d so will I be able to participate?

For the main reliability survey you can be from anywhere. There's a universal bodystyle / powertrain form on which you'll be able to specify that it's a diesel.
For the other surveys, it's necessary to specify the specific powertrain, and I have mostly U.S. market powertrains in the list so far. I have added diesels to the powertrain list for some other BMWs, though, and can add this one since there are just a few model years to deal with. Where can I find a complete list of European powertrains for the car? |

www.bmw.co.uk has all the same models as us (except in RHD) and their website is in English
