Hard start up??
My 135 has about 250 miles on it, and I've noticed that every once in a while, it starts hard. When I push the ignition button, it normally only cranks for a second or two before firing up, but a few times, it's taken at least 4 or 5 seconds of cranking before it fires. Has anyone else experienced this at all??
So far, I think it only happens when I've had it up to normal operating temp, and let the car cool down - it will then start hard. But if I'm driving, shut it off, and fire it up again, no issue. Any ideas?? *One more note.. is anyone else's clutch "loose?" What I mean by that, is if I'm under normal acceleration in 1st gear (in stop & go traffic)... If I push the clutch in as I'm accelerating, I hear a sort of "rattle or knock" from the tranny. Has anyone else experienced this, and is it normal?? Thanks!!!

I get the hard start up numerous time when its cold. I don't think its normal given that its not freezing temperature here anymore. My odo is at 500km, if this continues, going to take it to the dealer.....

Chicago1, did you ever get this problem fixed? I just picked up my car Friday and put on 175mi this weekend and have already noticed this problem. Will be calling them tomorrow about it but wanted to see if you got this issue fixed.

I've experienced this a couple of times on a cold engine. Having previously driven a carbureted car as well as a direct-injected diesel engined truck years ago, my immediate reaction was to give it a little gas and it starts right up. I'm not familiar with the symptoms of a failing fuel pump so let me know what the dealer says.

Have you read through the fuel pump issue threads? You should compare what you are seeing with what they experienced. It sounds similar.

I now have about 230miles on the car now. Talked to my CA today and it definitely shouldn't be doing this. I have an appt next Thursday to have it checked out. I'll let everyone know what they find. They don't "believe" its the fuel pump problem, but more of a software issue. We'll see what happens...

A friend of mine has a good hookup with a service guy at my dealership. I have an email in to him... waiting for response. Hoping he'll just tell me that it's a known problem and to bring it in and he'll take care of it. We shall see. I'll post the outcome when I hear back...

I had my long Cranking issue fixed 2 weeks ago
I original posted my issue on roadfly 1 series forum:
http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e81/8932809-1.html So here is my issue cut and paste from roadfly forum: This morning I had to try pushing the start button like 4 times and had to insert and remove the key several times before the car finally started. Then later in the day it seems like when you push the start button it seems like it is having a hard time starting before the engine actually starts up. Anyone else encounter this problem? I think I will make an appointment to have it checked out soon. It seems to hesitate to start throughout the day today. Drop it off at the dealership on a Saturday morning and they kept it for 7 days: Dealership just called to let me know that they need to send the data to PUMA to find out how to go about my problem. They were able to replicate it. My service advisor believes it is a high pressure issue in the fuel pump. They are not sure if that will need replacing or some sort of programming depending on what PUMA has to say. I just hope I don't have a lemon. Finally PUMA told the dealership how to fix it: Apparently this could happen to any 135, 335, and 535: "High Pressure Pump" needed to be replaced as there is an updated one. Dealer has it in stock and replaced it. They are keeping it until tomorrow just to make sure for quality assurance. Dealer assured me this will definitely resolve the starting issues for sure.

Works great after the high pressure pump was replaced.
I forgot to mention that after the replacement, the car always started right away without any problems so far knock on wood. My issue started happening at 2500 miles and had it fixed at 2900 miles when it just got worse and worse since there were times when it would crank up to 6 seconds and did not start.
Funny how my service advisor said it sounded like something he encountered on a 335 before consulting PUMA. Just set up an appointment and get your "High Pressure Pump" replaced and updated. It starts up normal now!!

Hard starts?
Over the last 2 weeks I've had 3 instances where I push the start button and it takes a good 10 seconds for the engine to actually turn over. All 3 times it's been the first time I started it that day, and subsequent starts where normal.
I originally thought it had something to do with how long it sat, because the first two times it was after 36+ hours of not driving it. However the last time it happened, a couple of days ago, I had driven it the night before and it happened about noon the next day. So it had been maybe 16 hours. I know I read somewhere that this might be a sign of a failing fuel pump, but I'm hoping there might be another explanation for it. Anyone have any ideas? Should I be worried? Dan |

I may be the next victim to fuel pump bug
I have a 08 135i with 2300 miles delivered March 22nd. Prior to this I had one incident when the car took 5 cranks to start. Just half an hour ago, my car took roughly 10+ cranks before it started. Alerted, I switch off the engine and tried again. The car started from first crank this time. However, I have an ill feeling about this.

More common on the first and second year 3 series, but supposedly fixed on the newer 3 and 1 series. Time will tell if it's true. Good news is other than this the 1 series is pretty reliable car. And the fuel pump issue is a known problem which dealer should not have a problem fixing.
My 07 Civic is no less problematic, already went in once for a window repair under warranty. Then I just got an mail from Honda Co. for a recall that over lubed unit may cause shorting of brake lights. :-)

fuel pumps still go tits on N54 motors all the time. Incredibly too common IMO, but that's technology sometimes. The fuel pressure those engines run is high even for DI, so they probably need a better pump, but that might suggest the original one was innadequate and could cost BMW alot of money, so there you go.
