ADHESIVE/STICK ON NUMBER PLATES IN AUSTRALIA?
Anyone know where the "law" stands on adhesive/stick-on number plates? I've seen a few around town on various imports (Porsches, Lambos), and I'm keen to have one on my front bumper rather than having it drilled into and having the number plate holder attached.
I've had a graphic designer friend of mine replicate the plate, font and all, and have found a company who will print it on reflective white vinyl. Has anyone here had one on any of their cars in the past? This AW 120D appears to have a stick-on plate:

Can't remember now. Wasn't that much. I think $220 or something like that. No big deal but do you really want to get pulled over all the time?

i asked this question before, and the consensus was that it was illegal... but cops seem to let it slide with exotics....?
there seems to be a mount you can buy for the front number plate (well i've seen it on photos), but looks a bit ugly, so dont know if it really out weighs drilling holes in your bumper.... |

I'm going to give it a shot, and take my chances. Can someone who has their car please do me a favour? I need the following exact measurement in millimeters... must be the M Sports bumper (standard on 135i).

Attached is the victorian regulations in relation to number plates.
Let me know how you go Cozza. I would be interested in a stick on one on the front. Can your friend do a slimline style in black? |

Thanks for this. I couldn't see anything in that document pertaining to stick-on plates or other such info about non-standard issue plates. I reckon I'm ok so long as I adhere to the rules outlined. The plate I'm having printed is an exact replica of the atual plate I've been issued, right down to the font and even the Victorian Coat of Arms! My mate owed me a favour, but I dunno if he would do more.. I'll ask, but he may want to be reimbursed for his time...

I'm getting a company called Signarama to print it ($66), not my graphic designer friend...

cozza, 66 is not bad, but in looking at this carefully the regulatory issue seems to stem from the usage of reflective materials and not stickers per se. as long as the cop can claim the material is reflective you get done in. any chance the sticker can be done on non-reflective material instead?

I'm sure it could be, however the only reflective portion would be the white areas of the plate, as per a normal number plate. All number plates' white areas reflect light... ever tried taking a photo of your number plate with the flash on?

when you said reflective i was imagining those white "almost-holographic" surfaces. i guess this is far less reflective. well then, i better go buy those plates i'm after before they go!

I got my plates already.
I've got a whole lot of plate ideas that I was considering before I got mine. Happy to post these if any one is interested. |
