Install Shadowline tips on Performance Exhaust
You don't need to setttle for the finish provided by the manufacturer. I should have mentioned that a better way to re-contour the covers is with an exhaust pipe expander. I didn't have one large enough but I may pick one up and redo it. Harbor Freight has an inexpensive one that should do fine:

Huh? The overall length at the maximum extension point (the point where it sticks out furthest) is still the same as stock and was not cut back. Only enough material was removed to match the contour of the tip covers. I can see where my use of the term "re-contour" in the above post may have been misleading. You have to cut to re-contour. The tail pipe expander can be used to bend the lip outward to lay flatter against the part it covers. You do this after the tips have been cut and the covers installed. This should make it easier to do a sano job plus it can be done on the car.

As I've posted before the sound is awesome! EDIT*** I stand corrected. I cut 1" off of both tips and the end result looks much better.

It's dirty and just a phone picture, but you get the idea:

I have the stock exhaust, but hey, couldn't this be a simple way of getting a larger exhaust tip?
I think a 1/2" expansion in diameter would look good...maybe even more.

No pics. The interior of the stainless tips on the Performance Exhaust turn black, just like the interior of the original aluminum tips. The black exhaust tips are merely "finishers" that slide over the original as well as the Performance Exhaust tips.

Thanks, 2nd question. In the old days when putting chrome tips on my E21 323i, or on the 325i E 30, the tip would slide over the pipe and there was a screw you tightened down to hold the tip on to the inner pipe. Do the black tips need this or are they tight enough. (or even too tight so they cannot be removed if wanted or needed, e.g if rust builds up)

They're pretty tight. I had to bang them on with a rubber mallet, but if I really wanted to (with a little elbow grease and a lot of profanity) I can remove them. Don't over think this--just do it if you want BMW shadowline tips on the performance exhaust.

This was a good thread. Just put the PE on my car a few weeks ago. Love it but didn't like the tips and how far they stuck out. After reading this thread took my shadow line tips from the stock exhaust went to a muffler shop and twenty minutes later for 30 dollars had the pipes shortened 1 inch and the shadow line covers put back on. All is good with the world again . Great info on this forum!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread for an entirely different car, but I'm trying to find black tips to match my shadowline trim for my 2011 328i Coupe. Anyone know if these tips will fit the stock exhaust. I'm told I need 3" tips, but that has been mentioned in conversation about replacing the existing tips whereas these would have a different diameter because they are held by friction, yes?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm having a really hard time finding info on this surprisingly. BMW won't give me a straight answer on these or the M3 tips. eBay sellers all assure me it will work, but the more legit online parts dealers will make no such promises and charge hefty restocking fees if it doesn't.
