Costco gas anyone?
So I've been going to get costco gas since I usually bulk shop there, its convenient, and its cheap. Is it the same as say shell or chevron?

I'm pretty sure that the only time you're running a risk of getting lower grade gas anywhere in the US is at old stations that haven't upgraded their tanks and plumbing; everywhere else should be essentially identical, sans whatever botique additives they include to jack up the price.

I buy from Costco and i still get 21-23mpg with about 250 miles on a tank. Costco seems to monitor the pumps and change out the filters often.

Unfortunately, while the nearest Costco to me (15 miles away) has regular for $1.75 today, their premium is $2.03. Since 93 octane is available 12 miles closer for only $2.05, it doesn't pay to burn $2.00 worth of gas to save 20 cents!

The gas itself is the same. Where the brands differ is in their additive packages. The "bargain" brands put in only the federally mandated minimum additives for engine cleaning.
The "top shelf" brands all have their own proprietary detergent additive package, most (if not all) of which exceed the EPA minimum. Those companies listed in the Top Tier program must meet Top Tier requirements in *all* grades. Some brands not participating in Top Tier do so as well. But many other companies not participating in Top Tier put their best additive package in their "Premium" grade only. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to fill up with Costco if that's the only brand available, but I wouldn't make it my "regular fill." |

Lol, I just discovered there isn't a single "Top Tier" gas station within 30 miles of where I live. Gawd, I hate central Missouri.

Is that a rhetorical question or are you genuinely curious? I don't know why either, which is why I ask.

I've used Costco gas around 80% of the time for 10 yrs or so with no problems and my Porsche is pretty octane particular. I use Quiktrip almost all times that I don't use Costco. I slightly prefer Chevron gas but rarely buy it due to the slightly higher price.

I am a Shell whore here. Used to be BP for me but the local stations were price gouging and I made the move. Glad I did now seeing the Top Tier listing.

I would recommend running a small amount of lubricity additive, either fuel power FP60, Marvel mystery oil, or a very small amount of ashless 2-cycle engine oil (TCW3 variety). as sulfur and aromatics are removed from fuels, lubricity and upper cylinder, fuel pump and injector wear is a big issue. |

I just use 76 most of the time.
Maybe once in a while get Chevron because of the Techron. The reason I'm not getting Chevron all the time is because I notice I burn through it faster. I blame the Techron. Still, if it does what Chevron says it does, I'll get it every so often.
