Limited Slip.
Do you know a confirmed LSD application for a 128i ? Please share if you know.
I searched, and talked to couple people via forums. Quaife is confident that 13N application fits to 128i however, it is never confirmed. I am expecting good news. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge diff is the same 135 versus 128, only auto and manuals are different but still have quaifes available for both.
Auto is the cheaper option because it is not welded in but a bolt up. |

Hi there.
I've bought a Quaife LSD. It's going to be installed within the next days. From the initial inspection the garage did, the crown ring wasn't welded. This could be linked to the 135 in particular. I'll give feedback soon from my LSD. |

I only see a manual LSD for the 128, but there are some auto prices here as well. Anyone know if there's a North American distributor for Quaife?? |

Man, I'm starting to wish my lease was up so I could finance my own car and put whatever I want into it

Well it's OK now.
No numbers to give for several reasons. The winter is coming and the ground's getting slippery. Si I cant' compare with before (I bought my car in may). My 1st impressions are of course positive. -What a grip there's now, the rear axle is pushing much more now. -I can really feel the outter rear wheel accelerating instead of the inner one slipping. -And now the ESP/DTC is acting much less. Impressive. By the way, I think the mechanical parts have to get a little used, it seems it's getting smoother with time. I'll give further feedback after having driven on some more open roads. |

Hi Lucky1,
The LSD was about 800£ while the installation costed 1000 CHF (~600€). I'll test it on snow this WE I hope... (I haven't tried my car on snow yet but my previous BMW 325ti did really miss such a diff on snowy conditions) The car feels definitely different now. Much more exciting when it's about curves. It's worth it IMO although a bit expensive. |

Well, I've finally tested it on some alpin roads.
I tried a lot of slow in-fast out in hairpins. It's impressive how the tail grips (dry tarmac, 0°C, 205/50/17) : you can flatten the throttle with a peacefull mind, if some drift comes it's very progressive. No sudden grip loss. I strongly agree with the guy who said that the car is more communicative with the LSD. By the way, I think the car was too loaded (snowboard stuff + friend + luggages) to drift more when going out of these hairpins (or the car wasn't "torquy" enough). To do so, I should have entered the hairpins faster... this is for next time. I haven't driven enough on snow to give a reliable feedback. For the moment, all I can say it's that's really really promising and much more controllable. |

Well, time is now appropriate for a deeper feedback.
I've driven a lot on snowy roads these weeks and all I can say is that this LSD is definitely a must for any 125/128 (the install is cheaper than on the 135 due to the non welded crown ring). Much better handling, it doubles the grip on snow, allows incredible drift control compared to open differential where the tail is just nastily unpredictable and subject to 180's. Add a good set of winter tires and you're good to climb like any FWD car. I could really stop and restart the car in a slippery uphill without getting stuck. Last good point : this diff is gonna save your bake pads from getting worn since the T/C is quite useless now. |

Still happy with your Quaife diff? I am considering getting one for my 120d for the same reasons, better control and better grip during winter
How does it work with the traction controls DTC setting, does it still allow for some fun while tidying up the bigger slides?

Hi Ben,
It works perfectly with the DTC since the LSD acts BEFORE/DURING loss of grip and DTC (re)acts AFTER. I always drive with DTC semi engaged by the way, it's funnier and if I really want to have fun I fully disengage it. Believe me that's a great improvement. |

Sounds ace! I usually drive in DTC mode unless I'm really hooning around, then it all gets turned off. Good to hear that DTC's "save you if it goes properly tits up" function still works

The sure way of verifying this would be to look at your model year and production date for the vehicle. If your production date falls BEFORE March 2007, then you have a bolted differential ring gear. If your production date falls AFTER March 2007, then you have the rear axles where the rear gear is welded to the differential carrier. Quote:
The Quaife units are well engineered indeed. There is a cost effective solution from Wavetrac that is also available for the 1 Series and 3 Series owners. |

Just get in touch with Kevin Birds from birds auto (UK).
http://www.birdsauto.com/ He'll ask your chassis number. I have to warn people that the 125i and 130i aren't exactly the same, for this reason the garage had to manufacture a kind of spacer. To avoid bad surprises, I'd recommend to have the install done by some skilled garage. (I had it installed in a garage that deals with cars such as GT1's or Vector) A good point to begin with can be to open the diff housing and to identify what's written on it and to make sure it's not welded.
