I wish they'd just quit dancing around the obvious and call it an M1! Who gives a damn if there was a low volume car with the same name 20 years ago?!
M1 is the ONLY name that makes any sense whatsoever. There's an M3, and M5, and an M6, and they're all version of their respective series. M1 completes the lineup. Sometimes BMW just makes me want to bang my head against a wall with the stupid shit they do. X-Drive35i? WTF is that all about?! |

I hope they build it although I will never take the words out of a marketing vp, smoke and mirrors. Sign me up. Either this or the cayman after my Lexus, I am already moding it because I can't stand the way it handles.

It doesn't seem like they would need to do a whole lot to a 135i. They could use M3 suspension bits to make the handling more neutral and tighten it up a bit. I don't think it needs more power to have comparable acceleration but more could be added. I wonder if BMW would want the least expensive M to be the quickest, however. If they worked on the front end weight they could possibly eliminate the weight hanging off the back bumper and still have near 50/50 weight distribution. That would seem to be the only engineering challenge and it should be pretty straight forward. Less weight would also seem to make engine modifications even less necessary. And less weight helps handling too, of course. I don't know how much benefit a carbon fiber or aluminum hood would offer but that seems like a place to start.

I would vote against the 2 series name. The 1er is growing quite the following. It would be counterproductive to mess with the naming.

Won't be changed to 2 series. Even numbers are reserved for the niche models and pure sports models, not mainstream models. Think Z4, 6 series, Z8, and probable Z2.
1 series is a full model range therefore will stick with 1 nomenclature. Don't forget that in Europe we have 3 and 5 door 1er hatches too. But I also agree that BMW should get over the old M1 and use that name on an M 1er. As said above it fits nicely in with the M naming convention: M1, M3, M5, M6 etc....

I know people here will probably flame me, but I thought the original M1 was as ugly as hell. If you asked the average person on the street what they thought of the original M1 most would say they didn't know one even existed. I say get over something that never really was anyway and just call the damn thing an M1 when they come out with it. I consider my 135i to be an "M" version of the 128i anyway..............

Just don't let it come out in 2011. Gimme at least a full year to enjoy / learn my 135i.
But yeah, they'd probably swoop up the body a little more, quad tips, some interior work, susp. obviously, maybe some aggresive headlights and a little bit lower to the ground. Holy horrible grammar/sentence structure. No coffee yet. |

[quote] Not totally accurate. The Z4 was the next generation Z3 and should have been named accordingly. But 7~8 years ago, BMW was flirting with the idea of using even numbers for convertible, roadster and possibly coupe versions based on existing series. Thus the 3 series based Z3 became the Z4 in 2003, the 1 series 'vert would have been the Z2, and the Z8 was intended to suggest a relationship to the 7 series. And, of course, the 5 based 2 doors became the 6 series. As that bright idea didn't last too long, it probably would have made more sense to call the niche Z8 a new 507! Now, if anyone can explain why my 128i displaces 3 litres but my '99 328i is a 2.8 - with more torque to boot... Tom |

I don't care what they call it, it just better damn well have more than the speculative 330 horsepower if it's really tagged with an M and the suspension better match as well. But then, I hate to even think of what they'll charge for such a pleasure of a car.
Would they dare to make an M1 better than an M3? Would an M1 in that case, be better than a current 135i with a tune and upgraded suspension? |

Yeah, M1 seems to be taken and in the history books, for better or for worse. I recall BMW had approached Mazda a few years back and wanted to buy the rights for the 'MX6' name, which Mazda refused. Hence why now it can only be called X6 ///M. (even with a proper name I think that truck is a travesty)
Sunking420: If you thought the M1 was ugly, did you know that the M1 Andy Warhol edition is among the top 3 most expensive cars ever sold on an auction? (something like $30mm+ and it took him less than an hr to paint it) http://www.seriouswheels.com/abc/BMW...Art-Car-SA.htm
