A cop hit my car
On the way to work this morning, a Sheriff cruiser rear-ended my pristine 135i. I was at complete stop and he hit my car because he was looking at his in-car laptop. What are my chances of getting their insurance to pay for a Berk axle-back? There are scrapes on the stock tips and it appears the inside of the left tip has separated at the seam. I'd love to get a carbon fiber diffusor, but I don't think that'll happen. Hope these links work, what do you guys think?

I got rearended last May and I got a BMW perf exhaust for only $50 as my stock exhaust was pushed in and trashed and the BMW perf exhaust was only $50 more than the stock exhaust.
You are not going to have any luck with the perf diffuser. I tried that one and the diffuser is like $1200 and the stock diffuser is only worth $85 |

It seems pretty risky to do anything iffy involving the police. If you want to try and get any sort of "deal" I would make sure it only involved discussions with the repair facility. If it is an "average of three" sort of arrangement, you may be able to get a settlement big enough to do something else with if you know somebody who does good work cheap (but those two things tend not to go together). I definitely would not try and pretend that the car had things done to it that it did not because they might check and that would be fraud. The last wreck I had the other parties insurance wanted me to take it to one of the repair facilities on their list and if I did, I would see no bill and they would guarantee the work. Even in that arrangement, you could work with the repair place to modify the car as they do the work and you pay only the incremental cost. Nothing shaky about doing that. But it will cost you something. I also got a rental but it was not so convenient - had to use Enterprise which, despite all their adds, is not very good to work with.

Insurance is there to put it back the way it was, not to upgrade it. But with right body shop who knows.
I assume the Sheriff took responsibility. Around here I would expect they would site you for unsafe lane change, wreckless op or arrest you for interfering with the duties of a police officer.

Yes, the Deputy took full responsibility, he had to call in his supervisor to the scene. They filled out the paperwork on the spot.
I definitely don't plan to fraud the police and I've already discussed the option of upgrading the exhaust with the repair shop. Even if I have to pay $50 out of my pocket for the Perf. Exhaust and the repair shop is cool with that, then no problem.

They will pay to put it back how it was. There is nothing wrong with putting that TOWARDS upgraded parts. Like others have said, look at it as an opportunity to get cheaper mods, not free ones.
Most times I've had a claim, I've gotten a check to cover the repair. If you want to do some of the work yourself, you can ofter upgrade with no cost since you are saving the money on labor.

Get the BMW performce exhaust upgrade and if you don't like it, just sell and replace it with an after market cat back system.

Body shops are notorious for padding the estimates to cover your deductible. not saying it's fair or legal, but im just saying...
i'm sure if your body shop is dishonest enough, anything is possible. With that said, I believe in karma. If I did that, I would pull out of the body shop with my CF diffuser and get t-boned by an 18 wheeler. lol

insurance company cuts a check based on the estimate of the body shop, just talk to the body shop and create a second invoice that you have to cover that will pay for the additional cost of parts.

Yup, that sounds like what I'll do if I decide to get the Perf. Exhaust.

I doubt the cop got a citation. My buddies first day on the job (as a cop) he hit someone..What a great way to start out. Everyone at the station made fun of him.

My ex brother in law used to be a cop. After graduating from the academy he did his NSU tour in the 73 (East New York in Brooklyn). One day while driving the RMP with his training officer he pulls over a taxi for a traffic violation. He flings open the door to the RMP to get out but doesn't look behind him. Along comes a UPS truck and takes the door clean off. For the rest of his tour he heard about that one!

Ha! Nice. I could tell the Sheriff that hit my car was embarrassed. There were lots of people watching.

hey bro sorry to hear about your situation, it will all be fixed in no time. if this helps your mindset at all, savour the moment and please be thankful that you dont live on long island, where the cop would have blamed it on you ( even tho you were clearly doing nothing), give you a ticket for tints, another ticket for traffic violation, search your car without asking, then after his pristine crown vic drives off your wondering to yourself why he gets to do whatever he wants and then proceeds to go to dunkin donuts and stuff his face with donuts.
you deserve a PBA card or a get out of jail free card or something at least, for not giving the guy an earful. ninja edit: i can go on but ill save you the trouble bro!!!! i wish i lived in cali

Sooo true Be thankful that you dont live on LI. The cop will completly ignore your PBA card and procede to give you a ticket for doing 70 in a 55 and another ticket for failure to obey a sign (the sign being the speed limit 55 sign) |
