Ventilation Baskets
These things are driving me nuts. The little intake vent baskets under the hood beneath the hood hinges. Mine get blocked with leaf debris in a week or two. I try to clean them out by hand the best I can but they're positioned where its hard to get at them. After I get as much as I can I lift out the baskets carefully and crap fall down into the void. Over time that stuff is gonna rot and cause blockage. Who has a good way of cleaning them out?

I'm more worried about the dents on my radiator/intercooler.
Damn rocks. Have you tried fabricating a custom vaccum nozzle to suck it all out?

Don't park under trees, or clean more frequently.
If you're still worried, you could drag the garden hose over and flush them out after cleaning... ianc

Yes, they are annoying, but still it's nice to be able to clean them out... I don't think the dings in the rad are a big deal, all cars get them.

You could always hit with a pressure washer at the car wash if they are that bad. I live in a neighborhood with plenty of trees and have no trouble cleaning out the vents every 2 weeks though, maybe make sure its dry and vacume

No, those are under the giant filter assembly at the base of the windshield.

Does anyone know what these traps are protecting? Like where the vents lead to? I was cleaning them out and one of the baskets tipped and dumped some debris down the hole - d'oh!
Just wondering if I should be concerned or not... |

It is more critical if they are drain holes... Otherwise depending upon location (im not looking at my car right now so cant place their spot in my mind), you could get bad things like water in the floorboards...
I like the vacuum approach myself. More positive of a way to get as much junk out as possible. I'd recommend someone do a flow test on these drains and see where they come out, so they can be cleaned from the output side too. And for those who can't seem to vacuum their cars because they live in an apartment or similar - here is a tip. Go buy a dewalt "nano" tool kit, like their 1/2" 18V drill or impact driver. Then, go get their wet/dry vac. It can run both off of wall power or the same battery, and it is powerful with that battery... And you can take it anywhere. |

No, the molded air comes from the standard vent rot that BMW's have been plagued with as far back as I can remember.

keep those drainage areas clean! in my 328is, one of the drain holes in the sunroof area got clogged by decomposing leaves, and every time I hit the brakes, water would pour on my head. with the sunroof open, of course.

Didn't know what you guys were talking about so I went out and checked ours. Driver's side, the basket was pushed down in the hole vertically, pulled it out and fit it so it sits flush with opening. Passenger side, not even in the hole, sitting behind it doing nothing............go figure.
