N55 aFe Dry Drop-In Filter
I was looking at HP Autowerks new foam filter for the N55 and wondered if any other companies had released a drop-in filter for the N55. I called up Alan************ and asked him if he knew of any other brands. To my liking, he told me that aFe had JUST released their N55 filters: oiled and dry. I raced over to **********s to pick up the new dry filter. Surprisingly, the people from aFe were there today and helped me install the filter! Talk about service! Haha. Anyway, I haven't looked at the gains yet, but my seat dyno feels that the throttle is a little more responsive. I'm going to dyno test the new filter on Thursday so keep checking back with this thread.
Thanks again to Alan************com! and nice to meet the guys at aFe! Here's a couple pics |

The oiled offers better flow and performance but the dry is easier to maintain and offers better filtration. I prefer oiled but if you don't want to deal with reoiling, then go with the dry.

In for the dyno results
Can you go over the basic steps for re-oiling a filter? Also, how often one needs to do that?

great explanation! most people that go with oiled filters usually recharge them after 10-15k miles. idk what they usually recommend. a friend of mine just tosses his filter and buys a brand new one everytime lol

If it's ~10-15k mile increments, I guess buying a new one isn't too bad for the lazy

Oiled filters typically make the most horsepower and have the best filtration. The aFe Replacement Air Filter outflows the factory air filter by 33% and is designed to improve performance and fuel economy. The typical time frame to re-oil filters is roughly about 15-20k miles. If you're not too fond of the maintenance, than the dry filter may be the better solution for you. I'll shoot you over a PM with more details!

If you do the cleaning and oiling properly you'll have no issues with the oil. Cleaning and re-oiling is very easy to do, but can be done wrong. Some people simply use too much oil and/or don't allow the oil to set before reinstalling. In my experience, it's best to clean on a day when you won't be driving for about 24 hours. You clean and dry the filter completely, then oil it properly and let it sit. Then reinstall and you're good to go. My Laser turbo ran great for 10yrs and over 140k miles before I sold it, still running strong. It had a large round K&N. |
