Progressive Insurance Quote WTF??
Ok I currently drive a 2009 135i and I just did a quote on the progressive website to replace my 135 with a 2007 Cayman S. It said my insurance would go down $660 for 12 months! How can a Cayman S be cheaper to insure than a BMW 135i? That's just crazy to me. Maybe I will switch over.

Be careful with those online "quotes." I talked to my existing insurance company, not a big name company, they said they often suck people in with "low" insurance rates only to raise them in six months time. I would believe it when I see it down on paper. If it's too good to be true...

B/c i'd imagine there have been more cayman's sold than 1 series. More of them out there means the replacement parts are cheaper therefore cheaper to insure. Simple supply and demand. Also look at the demographics of the drivers of the vehicles and the amount of claims put in.

Actually read somewhere else that Porsches tend to be "cheaper" to insure that other sporty cars based on owner demographics. Porsche owners tend to be older (40+) than the owners of say Camaro's or Mustangs. So while collision rates might be slightly higher, liability tends to be much less.

It's not just the cost of the car. The major portion of how much it costs to insure relates to the majority of the drivers who drive them, and the number of claims they make, along with how much it costs to fix them. For me at 45yrs old, A 2-3yr old Vette costs as much as my 135i. Corvettes, Porsche's, BMW sedans or any car that is mainly driven by older people tend to have lower rates, especially if you too fit the demographic typically associated with the car. I've also noticed that Porsche's tend to have quite low mileage given their age. That also speaks to the fact that older drivers tend to buy those are drive them more for fun than as daily driving commute cars. Less time on the road means less of a chance of an incident. Back in 2006 A VW GTI was about $300 per year higher than a $10k more Audi A4, which is the car I got. Insurance companies are good at their game. They have LOT of stats and experience by which to take risks. |

Great, hopefully the ex-EVO and ex-STI douche rockets don't wrap too many 1ers around poles so our insurance rates go up. miiipilot

I worked for Geico for a year....you'd be amazed at how much actually goes into calculating your rate. A huge factor people don't realize affects insurance rates are the investment rates. The lower they are the more we pay. Our shitty economy has had a really adverse effect on our rates raising the past few years.

We just switched to Geico. For my 2011 128i, and her 2010 honda cr-v exl awd we pay $99 per month. I like the rate; and coverage matches the liberty mutual policy that was twice the price.
